I'm amazed how someone suggesting the police use a 5 kph speed tolerance morphs into advocating for dangerous driving.

It's the flip side of the "if you're driving below the limit, you must be driving safely" coin.

[ removing speed tolerances.

The reality is that it is impossible to drive exactly at the speed limit , it is a best attempt.

I agree with above statement. Maybe the speed limit isn’t the speed that everyone should be aiming for. In the news article it had the statement, paraphrasing as don’t have in front of me "the speed limit isn’t a target"

Seems that it is a maximum speed, and traveling at slower speeds is fine. If people behind you don’t like it they have to suck it up, and if they do a dangerous overtake that is on them, not the one traveling slower.

I been at a red turn left arrow light with a car honking behind me, happened more then once. I didn’t turn left just because upset driver behind me that didn’t see red turn arrow, I just left them honking away, with couple shakes of my head.

Wellingtonians will know where I am referring. Often as we travel along the Motorway to SH2 there will be a muppet that will pass us and we are at 100Kph and we will see the driver swapping lanes, speeding up slowing down, doing unsafe lane changes only for us to pull in behind them at the Melling lights. The outcome of all this muppetry is wasted fuel, wasted brake wear, putting other drivers at risk for zero time saving.

You are only seeing the "fails"... you *never* see the guy who does the muppetry and successfully gets to the Melling lights before they turn orange. So, sadly, your analysis is flawed. For some muppets, and indeed for the average muppet, there is some time saving.

The Police didn’t need to announce anything, and ticket people if they are 1+ kph over the posted limit if they want to. That would have avoided all of the pointless commentary - pointless because no amount of commentary will make any difference to anything.

One thing New Zealand roads need is more pull off lanes for trucks, motorhomes and vehicles towing caravans and boats to pull over safely.

I'd go further and say that NZ needs a 4-lane 100kph divided expressway from Auckland to Wellington, and further. As soon as you have 2 lanes in each direction, differences in traffic speed become a non-issue.

Anyone who has driven in America will know what I mean.

That would be expensive the whole way but even in places where the land is flat and open there's not enough passing lanes e.g. Himatangi let alone double lanes.

Well I’m glad the announced it, may have saved me $30. Now driving at 47km/hr in a 50km/hr area. Makes no difference to me being 3km/hr slower.

The road is now a whole 3km/hr s safer now. 🤣

Why stop at 4 lanes?

I'd like 8. That way a couple of idiots can travel slowly abreast, while the rest of the world gets on with their lives.

The lanes need to be wide to accommodate trucks and buses and motor homes. I've noticed a lot of people fail to deal with a large vehicle on a small road.

How would you fund this? The Transmission Gully is costing over billion dollars I would say bridging the valleys at the northern end of the central plateau would cost tens of billions. We are only five million we simply cannot afford it and especially since the hit Covid-19  has given us.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

It's more than that if you allow 5Kph drivers will take that to mean 10Kph and so on

Trust me, having driven on something like that in LA, I can tell you: There are plenty of muppets on those roads too and plenty of road rage.

One of the things that seemed to happen a lot was a muppet in the far left lane deciding to dive through 7 lanes to take the exit.

I still remember my first experience hitting the 405 from LAX: Night time, muscle car with small wing mirrors, first time driving on that side for years.

Instant discomfort.  All forgotten the next day with the sun up, the top down and lots of hp screaming up the PCH.

I'd like 8.

Because 8 will be at least twice as expensive as 4. Often much more because smaller roads are easier to route than larger..

4 lanes means that you get most of the benefits for the least cost.

everyone has missed the point that all the speed measuring equipment has an accuracy related to it, so the police couldn't possibly enforce a zero tolerance due to said accuracy. they would be up for a few law suits if they started ticketing people at 1-3kp/h over the limit.
