You can drive in any manner you please in AKL provided you don't speed (at camera locations) and provided you don't run red lights (at camera locations). Everywhere else is a free-for-all and the wild wild west.

The same applies Country wide unfortunately!

I notice that the police are using fixed hidden cameras on state highways again, because I got a ticket. the camera is close to the change in speed from 100 to 80kph and i simply hadn't slowed down quickly enough, smack on the hand for me. But, I think they should move the 80kph sign a bit further away from the speed camera and far fewer people would be caught.

Did some checking and found the camera has been there for nearly a year, and i've driven past it quite a few times without knowing.

My view that they should sign post fixed speed cameras, because the objective is to slow traffic down at that point, not collect fines.

Aye - and at the risk of kicking of the whole tedious speeding bun-fight again, this has always been my view.

If speed enforcement measures are implemented for public safety and controlling speed, they MUST be highly visible and publicised. If not, then they are at best purely punitive and at worst, cynical revenue collection.

Been a while since I drove in the UK, but the cameras there are very well signposted and often painted in bright stripes so as to be clearly visible. Here they are often not signed and are frequently well hidden from easy view.

I believe that the theory might be more that if they are hidden, then you need to maintain your speed within the speed limit at all times, rather than only when passing cameras.

It's frustrating to watch drivers suddenly remember all the road rules while within sight of a marked police presence, but elsewhere, they seem to somehow forget.

Years ago they used to signpost areas where mobile speed cameras were operating. I think the zone extended up to 15 or so km from the sign location. Heading north from Wellington, I reset my trip meter every time I saw a sign. I recall it never clocked over 15 km until I was past Foxton...

Fixed\mobile speed camera's are just revenue collectors...you see one and slow down, and once past you revert back to your cruising speed.

These on the other hand, will require a change in driving habits

Yeah, no body speeds in the Waterview tunnels due to the averaging cameras. I set the cruise control to the limit as per the GPS before I loose signal and have never gotten a ticket - everyone else it doing about 70 kph.

The upside of averaging camera's is you don't (necessarily) get pinged for overtaking someone who can't decide if they're Arthur or Martha or if they're going to post a pick pic or duck face on insta-gamy or face-butt first.

Speed isn't the problem in Auckland though. For some reason they think it is, but the entire city has 3rd world driving standards. I have driven in countries all over the world and Akl is very Asia-esk, and I mean the poor parts of Asia where licenses don't matter and a bribe will get out out of trouble, not the wealthy parts. They drive better than us in the wealthier parts of the middle east.

I didn't think they had been installed for the trial yet? Look like normal speed cameras to me and they are not signposted as Average Speed units..?

I was approaching Mt Maunganui from the East on SH 2 at 13:35 today and I'd just passed an on-ramp. There was no one on the ramp. In my rearview mirror I could see this guy racing up behind me. There was another car driving next to me at about the same speed as myself. So the Muppet - with a car load of people - races by on my left. I was doing about 100 (indicated) which is actually about 93kph according to my GPS. The speed limit here's 100kph. Most Japanese cars undershoot the 100kph by about 7kph.

No-one ever takes me seriously but require all cars to have a dagger pointed at the driver's chest installed on the steering wheel. Speeds would plummet and accidents would end. Not my idea, by the way. Something I read many, many years ago. Still a good idea.

Holy figs! That is stupidly close. If I were in your position, the little devil on my shoulder would've whisper into my ear that I should move over to the left, and the goody two shoes on the other shoulder would've been telling me to move to the right.

I would be inclined to listen to the devil. He's more fun.

On the subject of hidden speed cameras - they added in several large "breakdown/rest stop" zones on either side of the motorway between Green Island and Mosgiel.

Several times this month I have seen a speed camera car parked in one of these zones in the pitch black/darkness, with the only ability to see the camera is when you are right on top of it

That looks more like someone with no license to loose try to conserve momentum in their under-powered/overloaded car. Your typical boy racer would have and be too worried about denting their 20" alloys and ripping off their side skirts and front splitters to be overtaking on the shoulder.
