I have just bought a 2022 MG ZS ev (essence) and have used the granny charger on my ordinary house power socket (10a?). I have been looking for advice on using an extension cable with the granny charger if I go somewhere where the lead won't reach. EV forums have said never use an extension lead, others anyone will do, others make sure its uncoiled, check it for getting warm and make sure it is at least 2.5mm squared core wire. So all the usual outlets Bunnnings, Mitre 10 don't go up to 2.5mm, except one at Toolshed.co.nz. This is 10metres 15amp heavy duty with 2.5mm Squared wire. $69.90. Sorry can't do a link as i'm new.

I don't know about the MG granny charger.

My granny box has the option to set the charging current. I leave it on the default 8A.

In any less than ideal situation (like introducing an extension cord) I'd dial that down further.

The granny charger and cord assembly may be water resistant standard IP rated somewhere. Remember if you're introducing an extension cord you'll be subject to the extension cord water rating virtually zero.

Maccy: EV forums have said never use an extension lead,

The reason is extension cords introduce all kinds of additional risks directly related to extension cords used in any situation

It's safer to avoid it entirely than list all the failures and equipment damage possible and the reasons why and how to avoid it, which cannot be done 100%.

If the Toolshed extn. is rated at 15A then it will have a 15A plug so will not be able to be used with the usual 10A household sockets.

I doubt its worth carrying around an extension cord and the granny charger everywhere you go because most places you will be able to use a DC charger, yes its more expensive but so is carting extra weight and stuff.

maybe get used to the car for a while, on a trip keep the granny charger with you and borrow or buy an extension cord if your life depends on it at he time.

PIC OF CYBERTRUK

Saw this on Reddit the other day.

Interested to see how one of these would cope with NZ's narrow roads and carparks.
It's certainly polarising and I am not on the "like" side of the fence.

I'm also not one to want to see continued support of Musk and his brands, so I'd be avoiding this even if it was the greatest vehicle on the planet.

A look at the NZTA motor vehicle registration database reveals no Cybertrucks currently registered in NZ,  ( upto Dec 2024)

But it sounds like Tesla OZ might have one they have been hawking round the dealers in AU/NZ on promo...

Cant see it being a big seller here, neither with the EV enthusiast crowd nor the big diesel ute enthusiast crowd. It's a ridiculous EV, and a useless ute.

No the CYBERTRUK won't be on road in Europe, UK, Australia or NZ in its current form.

Would need significant redesign to meet safety standards.

Thankfully.

They had it (or another one) sitting in a shopping mall on the Gold Coast a few months ago. I think it's doing the rounds.

If it stays in that lane, it looks like it's headed to "Tesla South" on Kirkbride Road.

Obviously not rush hour since the car is doing 84km/h 😁

Thanks for sharing. Some interesting stuff on V2G and I liked the "Real Zero, not Net Zero" conversation.
