I know nothing about Teslas and I'm not their target audience, so I'm probably in a good position to test the door handle thing.

One of my friends recently ordered a taxi and a Tesla turned up. The driver had to open the door for me to get in as it wasn't obvious how to do it. On disembarking I could see a button on the armrest which I was able to use successfully to open the door, but I did not notice any manual override so would not have known what to do in the event of an electrical system failure.

My general reflection was that tech people make things far more complicated than they need to be.

My wife's had an i3 for a few years now and we both absolutely love it.

But I've been driving my 1990 BMW the last month and it's just been a joy. It starts with a key turn, I have a button to turn on the aircon, buttons to adjust the stereo volume, a stalk to indicate (steady) and a handle to both get in and out of the car.

Manual, straight six, tickled exhaust, leather Recaro seats, lovely.

Scott3:

For the tesla's, I suspect it is a combination of:

  • Very high performance in some trims attracting the kinds of drivers who enjoy a higher risk driving style. I suspect the ability to do 0-100 in 3.1sec (model 3 performance) is somewhat detrimental to safety outcomes.
  • Environmental credentials attracting those who may not have previously owned heavy, powerfull cars. Even the base tesla's are very powerfull. Quite a change going from a Honda Jazz or Prius to a 200kW+ Tesla.
  • Having been the viral car of the few years prior to the sample period, for the young and cashed up, a more risky demographic than say Camry buyers.

I'm pretty sure for Tesla there's a 4th bullet point to add ...

Other than I have a button to push to start it sounds just like my Leaf.

BYD Sealion 7 unveiling at dealerships tomorrow. In the flesh, they are a magnificent looking vehicle, interior looks and feels very refined, certainly more grown up than the Atto / Dolphin and could make an interesting upgrade / replacement from an Atto3. Pricing released tomorrow too I believe.

Pricing for Sealion 7 is $68K and $80K (plus on road costs). So very similar to the Seal.

Doesn't seem to be a paint premium either, although the colours are all pretty naff.

Looks better than the Sealion 6 (imo).

Colours seem to be extra in Aus.  Price is sharper there of course (AUD 55k  - approx 61.3k NZD).

New activity in the V2G landscape https://www.interest.co.nz/technology/131972/electric-vehicle-batteries-bring-energy-flexibility-opportunities-including

I am currently of the opinion that "V2G will help balance the grid" is on the same shelf as "Green hyrodgen is great to smooth the grid"

It only works if you have mandated net metering,  but even then, the efficiencies scale so it is becomes very attractive for commercial grade (GWH+) battery investors to enter to market and totally eat residential installs for breakfast...

In OZ, the amount of large scale batteries going into the grid is huge, mostly funded by private equity and investment vehicles and they will likely be doing it at finance rates significantly lower than those available to home owners...

https://modoenergy.com/research/australia-nem-big-battery-energy-storage-pipline-report-2025

I can see this happening in NZ in the near future, likely co located with the industrial scale solar that is currently exploding around the country

Bearing in mind that Aussie GST is 10% and the various States have their own additional taxes that can add a couple of thousand to the MSRP, the price is a little closer.

I admit I did pop into the local BYD dealer and look at the Sealion 7 they had there (white premium). It was due out on a test drive so I only had a chance to have a sit in it and a play with the infotainment, etc.

The seats are electric with good lumbar support and I like the manual air vents.

On the infotainment, wireless Android Auto (and I assume Apple CarPlay) was a breeze and I was able to confirm that Navigation is displayed on both the driver’s display and HUD as well as the centre display. And the Nav displayed can be either the OEM system or Android Auto. The HUD seems to be bigger, clearer and with more info than the one in the Seal.

That short sit has peaked my interest enough to take the SL7 for a test drive at some stage.
