jjnz1: Tesla interest rate is around 8% for their car loans - anyone know of anywhere cheaper?
Dingbatt:
Without at least a UMC, you are at the mercy of the public charging network when away from home. Our use case, with a family bach in the Coromandel, means I use the UMC with a 15A socket we had installed. I have used the type 2 cable I bought exactly once in 10 months and that was experimental rather than necessity. Other times I use the UMC away from home is visiting the family farm in the South Waikato which is miles from any public charger.
A UMC is $600. A wall connector is $800 plus installation. A bit like a spare wheel really. You don’t need it……..until you do.
The only time I've used the UMC away from home in the three years+ I've had the car is when staying with a family member and it was only as a means of showing off how charging at home works. When I'm travelling I'll either use the fast chargers along the way or a dedicated AC charger at the hotel/motel I'm staying at. Obviously, if you often stay with family/friends who don't mind you using their power to charge your car then the UMC is of worth, but that's a scenario one needs to consider how often they'd do before purchasing one. Most of the family/friends I visit don't have enough room for me to stay with them or I'm not staying there overnight so I'm usually at a hotel/motel overnight.
The UMC is a bit cheaper, but I think the Wall Connector will be longer lasting overall and it's more versatile when it comes to charging capabilities if you decide you want more power later. It will also charge other EVs that might be visiting or you get as a second car.

Had the car for more than 4 months and still not had use for the UMC.
I think what works best will depend on your own situation. If you find like me that you do a lot of home charging then the wall charger might be a better choice.
If you travel a lot and have access to regular sockets for long periods the UMC might be better.
I know a lot of people choose the UMC as a cheap way of charging, but IMHO if you have the UMC as your primary charger at home, you really should get a RCD type B in your switchboard for it. And that that point the prices are fairly similar for a wall charger (which includes it) and a mobile charger + RCD type B.
The RCD type B stops the car/charger for leaking DC into the power network. The UMC has no such protection.

ROFL! I also just got an email from Tesla about it ... I mean I love my car and all, but 'hey you just spent $70K on a car so you must be in the market to spend $70K on a car' ... *shrug*

No, it's the same drop from Friday that has been discussed here.

Would this be the reason I can see so many 2022 Teslas for sale on Trademe at the moment?
Buyers remorse at being Musked, or people thinking they can sell and buy a new one while making a saving from the price drop?

No, I don't think so at all.
Sure a Tesla isn't a fit-all and Elon is a complete tosser (IMHO) but people are selling either because they can make a quick buck (ongoing) by taking the rebate and selling it on the basis of "get the car straight away!" or I also know many who have loved the Model 3 and purchased to the Model Y to "upgrade". There was less of a price drop on the Model Y also. Those who had an order in place and had not received their cars had the price drop honored for their order automatically.
Most people who have purchased a Tesla have done their homework...
Just another story I feel is really awesome. A week and a half ago I was in Auckland about to make my way back to Wellington so stopped for a quick supercharge. I ended up staying a little longer as I also asked if I could get some replacement wiper blades from the service centre while I was there. I met this very lovely 89yr old gentleman:

He was telling me that he ordered the Model X as soon as it became available in NZ being one of the first owners in NZ, has traveled all over NZ in it (he said it had done over 300,000km) and absolutely loves it. He was very clued up with all the features including Autopilot and loves how you can watch movies in the car while you're charging. He was getting a routine service on his car and the Tesla service guys all appeared to know him well. He also tells all his friends how there are (sic) 17 moving parts in a Tesla vs thousands in an internal combustion car and how he used to be a mechanic but loves the technology behind the Tesla.
Lastly, on the way home I met a lovely woman at the Mangaweka supercharger who asked for my help with supercharging and explained her husband bought her the car for Christmas. She did mention while she is new to the car (a Model 3) she absolutely loves it despite having to learn about it and did have the manual on the screen at the time to figure out how supercharging works. She was amazed that you only needed to plug in and didn't have to do anything else.
So while my statement above stating Tesla isn't a fit-all for everyone I actually don't know any people who have had buyers remorse about buying a Tesla and everyone I know with one (including in the groups) do love their cars.

Silly question from a prospective buyer - how is the Y much of an upgrade from the '3? Is it just the extra space?
