At what point is a 'car-less days' strategy considered, again? The added factor of EVs not relying on oil for fuel would surely see them exempted. That situation would definitely 'screw the scrum' in favour of EVs.
Why would they even consider carless days? It was a dumb idea last time to counter a manufactured situation. Nothing has changed to make a dumb idea any better.

Just saw this car in the local Queensgate Mall in Lower Hutt
Looks like a fully featured car but I can't understand why it comes only with Apple Car Play as standard, Android Auto is optional. That seems like a a strange decision. My Atto3 was opposite. AA came as standard and Carplay only was wired and I had to wait for a firmware upgrade to make it wireless.
Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD. https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

i think i would rather save up a bit more and get an ex demo or second hand BYD Sealion 7. They do have both flavours of connectivity too.

Carless days back in 1979 was a crude strategy aimed at throttling back fuel consumption in order to address fuel shortages brought about by conflict in Iran. The situation now is concerningly similar so how would you suggest better reducing fuel use in order to extend the period that transportation has fuel available?
Massively raising pump prices is an alternative solution but with extremely negative social effects. So far as a war being a "manufactured situation", that's a somewhat oblique way of viewing things IMO.
That aside the situation now with significant vehicles now on our roads that have no immediate requirement for fossil fuels would see a very different set of circumstances in play than in 1979. That was my primary point.

I'm guessing that the number of people on this board that lived through the oil crises (plural) of the 1970s is small, so TF probably has no idea of how close to shutdown things got. It also helps to explains Muldoon's think big projects some of which were aimed at reducing our reliance on imported energy - thinking here the synthetic petrol plant, the attempt to get another alumunium smelter to use the power from the Clutha dam, and the urea plant. Also LPG and CNG for cars.
If we compare fuel usage of now vs 1979 I'd guess that we are way more reliant on diesel for transport of goods than 45 years ago, especially foodstuffs, so any shortage would see massive disruption in short order.
We'll see who is dumb when supermarkets start rationing !
Edit; added car gas conversion subsidies.

I remember carless days alright, complete with a sticker for my car.
Looking back, the idea of carless days was a joke and when you read how much was actually saved (about 3%) you start to realise how silly it all was.
There were some contraints in oil supply but the real issue was that New Zealand had been sourcing 40% of its oil from Iran. This supply dried up with the revolution and apparrently New Zealand couldn't afford to buy the shortfall on the spot market.

Carless days were an idiotic reaction by a Muldoon government that was completely unhinged. The system was ultimately ineffective. It was just one on a series of awful government policies of the time including “Think Big”, the replacement of individual contributory superannuation with national super, farm subsidies and exchange rate manipulation.
Am in the market for an EV. I drive 500kms weekly. I have 7kW PV with no battery. Planning to spend max 35K. Saw a 2023 Kia Niro Light (35kNZD with 59k kms) and a 2019 Hyundai Kona (27KNZD with 54k kms) Thoughts? Or other recs?
We've had a 2023 Kia Niro Water for 16 months and it's great for our needs. Been on a few short trips (think Auckland to Taupo, distance wise) and find it very comfortable.
