PhantomNVD: Back to EV discussion please?

A while back we were discussing the possibility of a ‘range extender ‘ trailer... here’s an interesting option I just came across on YouTube... up to 50KW of battery and 1.2KW solar to charge it too !

Not really made to recharge a car, but for construction sites, off-grid situations. Still a nice piece of equipment.

News last week from Nissan NZ, that due to high global demand, the next gen Nissan Leaf won't officially be sold in NZ until at least the end of the first quarter of 2019.

"RedLock, the company that alerted it to the breach, believes the attackers may have done this to mine crypto-currency - an attack known as crypto-jacking.

Tesla said it had addressed the vulnerability 'within hours' and that no customer data had been stolen.

A spokeswoman added that the effects of the hack seemed to be limited to internally used engineering test cars."

I love when corporation say something was done "within hours", since it can mean literally anything: a century is 876,000 hours.

EVs are looking good over the next year. The 60kWh Nissan Leaf will come out, providing ~360km range.

Also: https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/2019-jaguar-i-pace-electric-suv/?ftag=CAD13782fc&bhid=21042758824545532419883291182906 for those that are looking good financially and wanting a nice car. Around 385km range from the 90kWh battery and pretty nice performance figures. You could play the "my Jag is smoother and quieter than your Jag" game at the local golf course. This car should be out later this year.

I am about to get a major service bill for my Mini. Whenever this happens, I like to go and see what my options are in terms of an EV. Still not at the tipping point for me personally, especially the Leafs - they're far bigger in real life than I realised, and a bit bulbous for my liking.

The Jag might be a game changer. It's a normal car that can go normal car range that just happens to be electric. It doesn't need to be cut slack for looking futuristic or having uninspired handling or driving experience because it's an EV. It still has to feel like a car I'd want to drive before I buy it.

We will be seeing a LOT of new EVs announced as current EV makers put out new models and a variety of car manufacturers put out EVs. Hyundai has announced a new electric SUV. GM will have over a dozen electric vehicles over the next few years, as will VW. There is the Porsche Mission E. Volvo has big plans for the EV market. It won't be long now before we have a huge range of makes putting out many models, there will be EVs to suit almost anyone.

It's comparable with the F Pace's sticker price in NZ - the point being it's a proper EV made by an established auto manufacturer, probably to more exacting standards than the Teslas (although that will improve with time), at a price comparable with the petrol versions.

There is likely to be little in that space until an electric Swift or something similar comes along; now if that was an option I'd be giving it some serious thought.
