Are you trying to order one from Japan yourself and afraid one may come without it? Next time I am at the dealership - I can ask if they ever came across one w/o.

Yes, that is exactly what I am trying to do. It seems that I can save $2-3k by doing this myself. I have done it before for my current car (VW Touareg) and it was a long but rewarding process. With an EV I reckon the risk is even less than a petrol car. Really the only thing that can go drastically wrong is getting one with a dud battery. But it seems even that is a pretty low risk. Only other major issue would be getting one with no SD card. Probably a good reason to go for an S model so I can put in an english headunit and not have to deal with a Japanese one.

'No SD card' shouldn't be a problem in the near future

Of course there is a market for it.. Every $$ counts for a lot of us here in NZ, so a Chinese android unit at a conservative $350+install can still be quite expensive for some.

Process is simple; You'll be able to send a picture of the Blue screen on your Leaf and we'll be able to create the correct SD card for it.. Japanese version is complete and we are currently finishing off the Japanese to English SD conversion.

I just use Google Maps on a phone mounted on the dash. You can download big chunks of NZ for offline navigation. These maps are more current than from any other source.

The Maps available for Android (I should imagine Apple as well) are very good indeed. Apps such as Waze, Sygic, Here etc all have very good features. The missing one from Google is the speedometer and Speed Limit. You can get additional apps with these features to add to Google Maps

A less than $200.00 8"LTE tablet can be attached to the air vents using magnets (Cost about $15.00 Magnets) Windows Tablets with LTE is also another and Windows Maps is also very good. Windows tablets with LTE are lot more expensive but cheap one can be source from overseas. I have both types and now prefer to Use the Windows Samsung Galaxy Pro S. It has a larger 12" screen which I have attached to the vents using 2 magnets. The beauty of this is I always have my Laptop Tablet with me. Great when I am charging I know you can use a phone and get the same results but working on a larger screen For me is what I enjoy.

Apple Car play and android Auto should help immensely with this in the 2018 version.....

The is standard maps on Apple devices but I prefer to use Navmii, its fairly detailed and easy to use!

But lost SD is rare in NZ and demand here is 0.001%. Many big dealers are swapping Jap units for Android - dealers already have plenty of units with SD to fix the issue if car will come without SD.

Thanks again for your input Ruki, though I do feel 0.001% isn't an accurate percentage :)

We haven't been working on the Leaf unit that long, maybe 3-4 weeks among other projects - I know the real need is in SD Japanese to English conversion with NZ maps but us Kiwi's typically like options too so having the option to have the Japanese SD fix isn't a bad thing.

Are you saying that NZ dealers are swapping out the headunit in a X and G for an android unit? In the process loosing all the functionality around climate control, charge control and making all the buttons in the surround largely useless? That seems odd. Generally I'd say that is a worse option than leaving the stock headunit in there.

It's easy to use the Japanese head unit if you have half a clue. Google Translate on a smart phone can do real-time transaltion of the display on the phone screen....makes sense of most of it. Beyond that there are YouTube videos and printed manuals with translations.
