I got my license in a company car. The upshot for the company was that I was able to then travel to jobs, solo. Honestly, what's the big deal. Companies upskill workers in all sorts of other ways, a driver's license is just another qualification.

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

It's one thing to train someone as part of their employment - for example, many young recruits learn to drive in the Armed Forces - where that training is carried out by properly qualified and experienced instructors. It's entirely different in my view to simply let a barely licenced, inexperienced driver loose on the road in your company branded or owned vehicles unsupervised.

It's a corporate reputation PR disaster waiting to happen, if nothing else.

Fortunately, running my own company, I am free to ignore society's view on that and substitute my own should I decide to allow anyone else to drive our vehicles.

Prize for the coach driver who missed hitting my car by about 12"in Mount Cook yesterday because he felt that the fact that I was actually on the one lane bridge he had right of way on (which he was not close enough to exercise when I drove on) did not constitute a reason to stop his coach.

I was about to say something unkind, but thought better of it. Coach and lorry drivers have to go through a lot of gear changes, especially if they are going uphill. They are not driving unloaded Minis. I think it is a matter of courtesy to give them the right of way where that is possible. Get over yourself and try to drive in the shoes of the other.

Edited to add: If you are already on the bridge, maybe you could consider backing up a little. A car can do that a lot easier than a coach.

He missed killing my wife and I in a head on collision which he made no effort to avoid by the length of a ruler, if that.

The vehicle on the bridge has right of way, in addition to his incredibly dangerous driving which can only have been deliberate.

When she had calmed down, my wife reported the event to the police, she felt it so serious. Unfortunately the coach was unbranded and both of us were too terrified to read the number plate at the time, so I doubt much will happen.

I wasn't there and so I can't know the circumstances. I can only go by what you said. I am replying on the basis of general principles. If the coach driver was a maniac out to kill you that is another matter, but you didn't make that clear.

Bollocks. Someone qualified to drive a bus should especially know better. They should have been driving in a matter such that they were prepared to stop and giveway to any vehicles already on the bridge. Noone should be forced to reverse in such a situation unless they were in the wrong.

I was driving north on SH3 about 20km south of Te Kuiti last night. I had my headlights on auto-dip, so as I approached 'something', they dipped.....but I slowed down because whatever it was it was invisible.

I saw a vehicle in front of me go around something....and out of the dark appeared a big trailer.....left fully on the road with no lights and minimal reflectors, if any. I went past and a truck driver had just pulled over. I pulled over, too, and got out to talk to him. Turns out he had unhooked the trailer there and was only going to be there until he'd unloaded the stock in the trailer.

Also makes it very easy to lodge a complaint with their company. Have had one or two where their driving privileges were revoked following a phone call to their employer.

Is that typical behaviour for the auto dipping? Even with oncoming lights it seems to dip very early. If you can't rely on high beam your speed is set by how far you can see on dip. Even if the trailer was lit up like a xmas tree the road could be covered in black cows.
