I was about to say something unkind, but thought better of it. Coach and lorry drivers have to go through a lot of gear changes, especially if they are going uphill. They are not driving unloaded Minis. I think it is a matter of courtesy to give them the right of way where that is possible. Get over yourself and try to drive in the shoes of the other.

Edited to add: If you are already on the bridge, maybe you could consider backing up a little. A car can do that a lot easier than a coach

He missed killing my wife and I in a head on collision which he made no effort to avoid by the length of a ruler, if that.

The vehicle on the bridge has right of way, in addition to his incredibly dangerous driving which can only have been deliberate.

When she had calmed down, my wife reported the event to the police, she felt it so serious. Unfortunately the coach was unbranded and both of us were too terrified to read the number plate at the time, so I doubt much will happen.

MadEngineer:

Bollocks.  Someone qualified to drive a bus should especially know better.  They should have been driving in a matter such that they were prepared to stop and giveway to any vehicles already on the bridge.  Noone should be forced to reverse in such a situation unless they were in the wrong.

Here is an interesting article concerning this topic which points out the law correctly:

How to cross a one-lane bridge in New Zealand

My partner has his Passenger and bus licence and apart from the above offending bus driver ignoring the bridge signage @MadEnginerr is correct "They should have been driving in a matter such that they were prepared to stop and giveway to any vehicles already on the bridge."

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

I was driving east from Tauranga on SH2 on Sunday Dec 22nd at 15:57. This was about 1.5km short of the Domain Rd exit. The speed limit is 100kph. My car measures the speed accurately and I was doing 'at least that'. If you know what I mean. I was in the faster lane, passing some slower cars as they prepared to exit at Domain Rd. It's the last free exit before the Eastern Gateway tollroad.

Two cars raced up behind and did some dodgy lane changes with very little room. The second car had very little room. My video makes the distances look much larger than they were.

Drivers like this die young if they persist... and risk taking others with them. Dicks. (The video has just been uploaded. It seems to take a while to process).

Just came back from driving to Whangarei and back to Auckland, and I wonder how we don't have more deaths on the roads given how people drive. I had someone pull out from the side of the road in front of me while I was doing 50KM/h at Warkworth almost causing an accident and then proceeds to give me the finger...

At the other end of the scale are the people that discard the road rules "to be nice", but don't use their indicators or anything so you have no idea what they're doing. Then I get stared at like I'm an idiot for not pulling out in front of him while he had right of way...

Driving from Napier to Wellington today. Pretty cruisy most of the times... Still hard to explain why some people drive 70k/h on a 100k/h zone... Then there was this one going at 90k/h on a single lane and when we got to the passing lane, he actually moved to the right - but didn't pass anyone. It took the driver almost half of the passing lane to realise he was being an ass and move to the left.

We may have passed the same traffic, we were travelling Hastings -> Palmy today from ~12pm-2pm.  I've got to check dashcam footage of a couple of minor incidents but one thing that concerns me was something that sounded like a large bolt hitting the car roof as I passed some traffic going the other way so hard I was surprised it didn't leave a hole.  Can't find a single scratch however.

I never fail to be amazed about how many drivers are so disconnected with what's going on around them. It's a miracle they ever get to their destinaion unscathed.

I hope no one here drives a red Audi TT, license plate JDP328?

And yes, just as he passes me that is an "overtaking lane 200m ahead sign"!

Having driven from Wellington to Auckland, with an excursion to Northland and then back to Wellington over the holiday break, I realised that nobody, but nobody keeps to the posted reduced speed limit on roadworks/new roads. The northbound lanes in the newly opened Longswamp section of the Waikato Expressway had a posted speed limit of 70 kph and I was constantly passed by both cars and trucks - and I was doing 80. Likewise the newly opened lanes around Takanini in Auckland had an 80 kph limit, which again no one stuck to. These speed limits are there for a reason on new roads and having traffic tearing along at top speed is just going to ruin new seal, or in the case of Takanini what is clearly temporary seal in some sections.

A couple of other observations that are not so much muppet related:

  • The apparent complete lack of police presence on our highways. We saw one marked police car and one mufti car in our trip north pre-Christmas and three police vehicles (two of which were on the Waikato Expressway) on our way back after New Year.
  • The complete frustration which is the Otaki roundabout. My understanding of roundabouts is that they work best where you have a more or less equal flow of traffic from each connecting road. During holiday periods that is never the case at Otaki. There is just enough traffic from Otaki Beach to completely disrupt the southbound flow, which on the day we came back, was a 58 minute delay between Levin and Otaki. As soon as you are through the roundabout, traffic flow is fine again.

Following on a little bit from the above post, not so much muppets on the road, but observations.

I live in the lower North island and have just come back from a South Island road trip (east coast from Picton traveling as far south as Dunedin, then the West coast as far south as Hokitika, then back to Picton via Nelson) in which we covered a little bit under 2,500km's

- The vast majority of drivers in the south had their lights on, regardless of the time of day, or weather. This meant you could see them more easily should you have needed to overtake.

- Apart from seeing 4 police on the road coming out of Nelson, I didn't see a huge showing on the roads elsewhere.

- The speed of other motorists. Especially notable on the motorways north of Christchurch.

- The general standard of driving seemed better.

I will confess to being guilty of this on a lot of occasions.

My, and I expect many others', reason is that there are so many supposed 'roadworks' on NZ highways that consist of rows of cones on the berm but without any actual work going on and no other circumstantial or physical changes to justify the speed limit reduction.

You'll come a gutser one day if you keep that up.  Previous road works all along state highway 50 comes to mind in that regard where if you ignored the warnings you'd find yourself hitting slips and trenches cut into the road among others.

Yep, absolutely valid, and I certainly don't drive like a lunatic and I don't completely ignore signage, particularly where I don' know the road.  The point I was trying to make (but didn't do very well) is that there are so many instances where the temporary speed limit isn't justified, that drivers get frustrated and complacent, start ignoring them thus increasing the risk at locations where the speed reduction is necessary and warranted.

Same could be said for reduced speed zones, eg the 80kph zone in the video earlier where the Audi driver felt open road entitled.

If that was indeed an 80kph zone I can understand why the Audi eventually got impatient and overtook at the first opportunity. The driver in that video was doing 65kph. I'm always suspicious of dashcam footage that has been edited from the standard 1 minute increments.
