PhantomNVD: Others who can get it will also recommend Flip for their ‘hour of power’ but they couldn’t take me with my 3phase meter apparently.

Probably because they are worried that with 3 phases, you would be able to use 3x the power during "hour of power".

That was my thinking too, but the salesman on the phone firmly denied it, saying they just couldn’t support the meter type 🤔

Well, at least I'll have a place to charge my EV when I am on holiday! Now they just need to make an EV that has decent range, handles well and has reasonable capacity. A BMW 335 EV Touring with adaptive suspension and steering with 0-60 of under 6 seconds with a range of at least 250KM would be my dream car (in a price range I can live with).

And from the Ev FB group:

Greg here from The Warehouses, as promised, details on our charger sites.

By July next year we will have added (in no particular order): Dunedin, Blenheim, Motueka, Oamaru, Timaru, Christchurch (Riccarton), Hamilton, Matamata, Taupo, Gisborne, Levin, New Plymouth, Masterton, Te Kuiti, Hawera, Porirua, and Palmerston North.

Of course, we have chargers already running in Auckland (Royal Oak), Rolleston, Gore, and Invercargill (though it’s offline at the moment).

I’ll provide updates as new chargers come online.

All chargers are 22kw three-phase with Type 2 plugs. Charging in free for the next few months, no tags or logins needed to charge, just bring your own cable.

Happy charging!

Curiosity led me to check this out because I spotted a rental-camper parked in the only EV charging space in a (chocker) public car park.  That must be illegal I thought ...

As it happens ... Nelson City Council have a sustainable energy strategy. But they don't appear (online published parking by-law) to have taken the step recommended by NZTA of updating their parking by-law to define an EV vehicle class and reserve public EV charging parks only for EVs (analogous control to a taxi stand or loading zone).  Possibly something may be in train or recently passed but was not on their website at the weekend.

Seems an oversight for a city with a renewable energy strategy.

Raises the question how many councils have taken the steps required to reserve public EV car parks for EVs only?  Also raises the issue of defining an EV quite specifically - the campervan could have plugged in to charge the house bank or whatever, but that's not the point of an EV park.

If my understanding is correct, in the absence of an appropriate by-law any vehicle can park in a public EV park.  That would be a rude thing to do but when parking gets difficult people can be inconsiderate ...

Some laws are definitely needed. Tesla was having problems in the USA of some inconsiderate Tesla owners treating the superchargers as free all day parking spots. And other Tesla's were unable to charge as a result. You now get billed for parking if you don't move your Tesla after it has finished charging.

So any EV parking bylaw would also need to exclude any EVs that are not actively charging. But then the Leaf models that have the 3.3KW charger will then be more desirable than the 6.6KW ones. As they will be allowed to park for longer due to being slower to charge.

From memory the park I'm referring to did have a P-something on it.  The charger is one of three recently installed by Network Tasman around Nelson that are free to use - i.e. funded by electricity users.  I might have to get an adapter for my cell phone so I can get my money's worth laughing

EV charge spot policy needs to be logical and incorporate whether rapid chargers or slow changers.

Are they free or charged for. On public land or private.

NZTA has posted out stickers that say EV so you could say these charging spots are p30 for ev labelled vehicles only.

Rapid chargers can charge a leaf in 20-30 minutes.

Chargenet chargers bill by the kW and the minute which acts as a disincentive to parking too long.

Plenty of people still park in supermarket disabled car parks so inforcement is a bigger issue.

At supermarket and such places the chargers should not be near the entrances. They should be far away to prevent them being the closest free park so petrol users use them.

Two problem groups, ev users hogging the chargers and non ev owners blocking charging spots.

In Auckland the are rumours that Tesla were using the free chargers to charge their cars before selling them which some would say is naughty but then the electric companies that put the chargers in are free to set the use rules.

yeah, logic would be nice

This went up down the road a couple of months ago,

Apparently you can use the "Spark plug" only in the middle park, and only for 2 hours, while the other 2 parks are just for EVs and you can park there all day (its a park and ride)

The spark plugin network uses type 1 cabled connection which OK for Nisan leaf.

With time they would replace with type2 Menzies sockets where you brighten cable specific for your car. Like new warehouse, supermarket ones.

My cable is 5m long do I could probably use any one of those parks.

So not ideal but better in near future.

No logic there.  Charging is the only argument for EV dedicated parks at park n ride.  Arguably there is more reason to attract ICEVs to park and ride than EVs. But in reality better if EV and ICEV owners take public transport

I'd wager the phone box location predates everything and the retrofitted a ev charge point.

Yes, they are using their prior phone box locations specifically as they already have a site permit and power to that placement... just like they did with adding WiFi to their phone boxes... who even uses a phone box for its landline in this day and age anyway?

Perhaps they are planning ahead to be able to facilitate 2 or 3 cars charging? Or like many Fast Chargers having 2 parkings for one machine so the changeover between users is quick and easy even if the first user is not on site to move their vehicle?

As they only providing slow charging they can probably facilitate 3 cars trickle charging from a decent 32A connection to the phone box.
