Ok you got me, they're not exactly the same size.
Either way, an electric Ranger is coming

As my Mum used to say, "So is Christmas". π Somewhere between now and 2030 according to the article you linked. I kind of think not in the next 12 to 24 months for our market.

I would totally discount Toyota in any BEV rollout plans as it seems they do not believe in them, having fixated on hydrogen fuel cell tech and hybrids. If you want an electric ute in the next few years it will not be a hilux. However, a good hybrid ute will have a place in the market for the next 10 years, especially for rural users.

Except that Toyota launched the bZ4X in April 2021 for delivery to Japanese market in 2022. It is a BEV in collaboration with Subaru and is supposed to be among 15 BEVs from Toyota by 2025 (and 70 ‘electrified’ vehicles by the same date). How many of those will ever grace these shores is difficult to know but even if it’s a passenger vehicle and a trade vehicle then you can’t “discount” Toyota.
Edit: Toyota NZ have confirmed the bZ4X is “coming to NZ”, which Christmas is yet to be determined.

There was a point where Toyota made nothing interesting and had completely lost touch with their competition roots. Now they have the 86, the GR-4 Yaris, an AWD manual Corolla and a BMW Supra.
If any company can pivot at the drop of a hat, it's Toyota.
The problem for Toyota is battery supply. Unless they are secretly ramping up their own battery manufacturing, they're going to be limited by what the current battery producers can make that hasn't already been taken by everyone else.

I am as guilty as any, but this discussion is veering into the “EV News” territory.

Thats pretty much it. EV's are great. Hybrids too. But until they occupy a massive % of monthly imports they make little difference to climate change.
Meanwhile, across the ditch ...
The Sydney Morning Herald - NSW to abolish stamp duty on electric cars in an effort to boost uptake
20 June 21
The NSW government will abolish stamp duty on electric vehicles and offer drivers thousands of dollars in other incentives to increase uptake as part of an ambitious $500 million plan for battery-powered cars to constitute more than half of all new car sales by 2031.
But EV drivers will be hit with a road-user tax within six years to fund road and infrastructure spending, as state governments look for ways to compensate for the loss of fuel excise revenue. ...
... Stamp duty will be removed from EVs that cost less than [AUD] $78,000 by September this year, and a $3,000 rebate given to the first 25,000 vehicles sold in NSW for under $68,000.
Once the distance-based tax is implemented, stamp duty will be abolished on all electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. ...

I wonder if RUC in New Zealand will continue to be free for electric car owners after 31st December 2021; otherwise it will add $1000/year (ish) to my costs to run a Tesla.

I would expect that you will have to pay RUC because, as a Tesla owner, you are obviously ‘rich’.

I expect the future of RUC will be included in the details that they reveal when they go forward to legalise the Clean Car Programme. We know that they've been reviewing RUC for all vehicle types and will potentially detach it from all fuel types so that everyone pays it via the same mechanism. They can't really introduce RUC to EVs without making some changes otherwise EVs would pay more RUC than Hybrids and PHEVs would pay double RUC.

My Model 3 is ready for delivery sometime between 5-8th July; unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll be able to head away to pick it up as it looks like ferry crossings back to the South Island aren't going to work out (many cancelled, or sold out due to school holidays)
As a result I'll just have to wait for the delivery truck to arrive whenever it arrives - sometime between 4-6 weeks according to the email I received yesterday.
