djtOtago:

Most, if not all automatic transmissions, lock the transmission when in park. This effectively locks your driving wheels from rotating. In most cases if you are in 4WD and your auto transmission is in Park all four wheels will be locked.

As demonstrated when someone hits your parked car and smashes out the silly little pin that’s used in that mechanism

MadEngineer: Imagine not leaving your car in gear then learning after a rough ferry sailing how two wheels under brakes weren’t enough to stop it rolling around. .

I can confirm park brakes alone are often not enough to stop a vehicle rolling around if the deck is wet and the weather is even moderately heavy.

I worked on several of the Interislander ships in the early 2000's including the Lynx. Every single vehicle was stropped to the deck by the crew as the ship made its way across Wellington Harbour and were only released once inside Tory Channel (or vice versa).

OK, Well had my new and apparently improved (modified) EPB installed today and passed my Warrant of Fitness. At no cost.

We are going to try and get used to using the AutoHold function.

Hopefully by time the vehicle may need another EPB we would have sold it on.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

my parking brake switch on a 2020 Sportage failed completely. called the  team at Ebbett Johnson, lady there told me I'd be fine to keep driving (which is obviously incorrect)

This was a lease plan vehicle, so left the dealings with them but the part took a long time to arrive.

In the end I just drove the car with my bosses blessing and they'd pick up any insurance issues.

Hyundai Tucson before that had a failed indicator stalk (would randomly apply itself the wrong direction)  again in a 2 or 3 year old car
