In Auckland, quite a number of places too.

Not ideal. were these where lane sizes were adjusted to incorporate cycle lanes? were there multiple lanes available? I am just trying to get a picture. It seem counter productive to create more congestion to accommodate cycles.

You apparently haven't  met AT (Anti Transport). They regularly do things to create more congestion to accomodate 'any' other form of transport. Examples include Nelson St in the city where they removed an entire lane (and a bit) for the cycleway. The mess that is Quay St or Queen St and many others. If it seems counter productive to you then they probably think its a great idea! :-)

In terms of getting traffic out of cars, surely, bus lane makes more sense than cycle lane (again, not anti cycle lanes where they make sense, and not anti cyclists (at all!), but it genuinely feels to me, that the people who advocate and design and plan cycle lines, are living in a separate reality.

This. I support bus lanes because it's public transport that scales.

Bicycles don't scale.

Plus you don’t need to own, store or maintain the bus. And it’s warm and dry inside the bus.

...but you can control the reliability of your bicycle.  Wellington public transport has a looooong way to go on that front.

Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?

There no reason why buses, cycles and pedestrians cannot be accommodated

For what it's worth, bicycles are actually permitted to use bus lanes and transit lanes, unless there's a sign that explicitly says "BUS ONLY". So depending on the geography of the infrastructure, it may make more sense to implement bus lanes than cycle lanes in some (but not all) cases.

Surely not all in the same lane!

That would be just plain madness!

In all seriousness, though - there's a series of cycle/wheel lanes in downtown Auckland (Beach Rd?) where I have tried to ride a bike and an electric scooter - the amount of people that walk in those lanes oblivious to the rest of the world is insane!
Add to that the occasional car that ends up in there, as a result of very poor judgement and it's a circus. It's less dangerous to skydive, I think!

@Handsomedan in some cases they are in the same especially when clowns are parked across the footpath.

Wellington has a number of, ahem, issues. Pipes, trains, buses. Did I miss any?

It's a question of how to get best bang for buck when spending on public infrastructure to support mode shift.

Every morning I stand next to the notorious Island Bay cycleway while I am waiting for the bus. During the period while I am waiting I typically see two or three people on bicycles compared with dozens of people boarding the bus.

I wish the Wellington City Council would do some proactive enforcement of this. They have told me that I should report individual offenders when I come across them, but they're usually long gone by the time parking enforcement arrive.

If parking enforcement could just cruise around the suburbs every now and again then a lot of fines would get issued and people would get the message.

@alasta it's terrifying having to go out on the road to get around vehicles parked over the footpath in my wheelchair. I cannot look behind with my back to traffic so i have no idea what is behind me.

I feel for you Mike. I do a lot of mileage running around Wellington and this is a major problem for me, but it must be far worse for you.

The other problem is those electrified hire bicycle things that you see scattered around the footpath. When I see them creating a blockage of the footpath I pick them up and throw them into the bushes as they are very heavy and a lot of people would be unable to move them.
