That is one of the reasons I drive with a radar detector, our dutiful law enforcement officers frequent the end of passing lanes with their radar guns waiting for us hoons to blast down the passing lane at >100km/hr yet completely ignore the muppets who only speed up on the straights.

In Selwyn district where I live, the cotton wool is well and truly out, roads that were 100 only a few years ago now 80 and others are 60 where they were 70. I can understand to a point that there is a lot more traffic on the roads than there used to be, but with the motorway extension only a (few?) months away from completion, this over population of these roads will be mostly resolved.

The Selwyn council also have a fondness for temporary speed signs instead of actually fixing the road. Although to be fair, the roading contractors in Selwyn seem totally inept and a repair never lasts long anyway, so maybe a lower speed is acknowledgement by the council that their contractors simply can't do their job.

Some cyclists have a complete disregard for traffic rules. They don't respect traffic lights, pedestrian crossings or life in general (I will say some because once I said "cyclists" and people complained I was generalising, instead of discussing the problem of those cyclists that don't respect anything or anyone).

I have seen the cops run morning campaigns at this light for that kind of thing.

And of course, if you posted a -driver runs red light-  video, it wouldnt bait the cyclist haters so well :-)

😉Mode of transport is irrelevant.  Thread title is Muppets on the Road, this guy went blatantly through a red which, in my view, makes him a muppet hence he deserves a place in this thread.

(For balance, a few years ago I posted a video of a car driving the wrong way up a one way street in this same thread.)

The cyclist in the video above is something that really grinds my gears...not just that particular thing, but also those that ride through pedestrian crossings, swing out into traffic and then expect to be treated like a car (at half the speed limit) etc.

But it's not limited to cyclists...I've seen people on motor scooters who get off, walk through a pedestrian crossing light phase and then jump back on afterward, so they can avoid the wait at the lights.

eScooter riders that blatantly disregard the rule also give us all a bad name...

I'm a part time cyclist, but understand my place on the road.

I was once turning right out of a side road into stopped traffic, a truck had left a gap for me to pull in front of him so I did. As I pulled out a cyclist going up the inside of the truck didn't see me pulling into the gap and so he crapped his cycle pants 💩 and abused me for almost crashing into him... I was gob smacked as there was no way for me to see him on the other side of the truck and he should have been more careful.

It seems these days cyclist can get away with anything as it always the cars fault.

Also the fact that they are a vehicle then a pedestrian then a vehicle again... just whatever suits at the time :)

Why?

I generally dont ride my bike on the road these days (just when Im getting to mountain bike tracks), but if someone hops off their bike, walks it, then hops back on.....who are they hurting? They're not breaking any law (in regards to some previous posts).

I ride along some footpaths on a couple of sections from my house to the local MB park as its safer than the road (come out of a walking/bike track, off the kerb, cross the road on a corner, ride 2-300m along a narrow road, back across the road, mount the kerb....on another corner), but only if there are no pedestrians. If there are I hop off and walk, then once past Im back on my bike. Nobody has been hurt but technically Im breaking the law.

You're not the use case that I am referring to...

The ones that need to pick a side and stick to it are generally the ones that expect all traffic to treat them as a fellow road user - allow me to ride two-abreast at half the posted speed limit and do not have the audacity to pass me - then breeze through red lights, use pedestrian crossings (often without getting off) do whatever suits...not behaving in any way that endears them to any side.

Also - if it's OK to behave like this on a bike, why can't we just do whatever we want on a motorbike/scooter/in a car etc?

I think the reality of all this is the problem isn't 'cyclists' or 'drivers' being 'Wayne Kerrs'. It's more the individual who probably has that entitled attitude in many aspects of their life.

Don't get me started on slow people in passing lanes!!

All things in proportion - a cyclist running a red light and tee-boning my car is going to hurt them a lot more than me (if at all). On the other hand a SUV/bus/truck/car running a red light and tee-boning my car could easily kill me.
