I live very close to that intersection; crashes are common, and unfortunately deaths are not uncommon either.

A motorcyclist died recently after a T-Boning, but in that case, from memory, he was the one that ran the red light.

Personally, I always double-check the traffic coming from the left before I cross over that lane (the lane the truckie blew thru the lights in) despite my light being green...

If that is the intersection at Aotea lagoon Porirua I can't understand why the limit hasn't been dropped approaching the lights. As an example the Palmerston turn off on the Himitangi Straights is a 70 zone if there is cross traffic waiting at the Give Way signs.

It is that intersection by the look of it.
Sounds like a good candidate for a red light camera too.
We take a very lassez faire attitude in NZ.

Agree, its crazy that its a 100 kmh speed limit going up to those lights.

They stay amber long enough for all vehicles to stop safely for a red, even when it's wet.

Those who don't obey the lights probably won't obey a 70kph speed limit either.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

I saw an accident at the Aotea intersection yesterday. An ambulance went across the intersection with it's lights on heading up the hill. A Holden in the right hand lane (heading south) had to stop to let the ambulance through but the Toyota behind the Holden didn't stop in time and went into the back of the Holden. Toyota's fault for following too close and not paying attention.

I got rear-ended three weeks ago (car currently in for panel work) through sheer muppetry.

Stopped at the side of the road by my driveway (bottom of a hill in a modern and fairly wide suburban street) with my brake lights on and indicator going (I was about to turn into my driveway but if cars are following I will pull over instead of holding them up and risking a rear-ending).

Offending muppet drove straight into the back of me without so much as looking up from her phone.

I suffered whiplash and concussion (only lasted a week and a bit) and her car was munted, while my trusty old Volvo needs a new rear tailgate and bumper, due to both being plastic and having flexed a great deal and losing their integrity.

Why do people insist on texting/emailing/surfing on their phones when driving?

To answer your question, because people are glued to them and they're so unlikely to get caught. Just this morning on the (Auckland) motorway I went past a few people staring at their phone and texting while driving at close to 100KPH. Yet they probably wouldn't dare exceed the speed limit by more than 4kph because they're more likely to get caught. The police don't have cameras that can detect people on their phone from kilometers away. There is an ad on the radio (Waikato I belive) saying that the Police are making the roads safer "by preventing speeding year round". How's that working out for them?

Like NZTA's cars that proudly announce they have their speeds monitored by GPS. I saw one go through a red light on Karo Drive, and another cut me off on the motorway. I'd personally much rather have those actions monitored than drivers that do 104km/h on the open road.
