Dont know about nasty....certainly interesting. A couple more like this could have huge implications with the extreme end being our motorways become unrestricted autobahns.

Personally; I'd be trying to use this as a case law if I was clocked a bit over the limit on a motorway with little/no traffic around. If you're going to lose your license anyway, why wouldnt you?

For the record: I don't have any points on my license, but have had a couple of camera tickets of just over the limit in the last 10 years.

Road engineers do not set speed limits for their own amusement, this utterly makes a mockery of the law.

I'm sure police everywhere are sighing heavily into their coffee over the paper and wondering when they hit their first speeder who'll claim they should get away scott-free because this guy did.

I would have kept my head down after that case.

Certainly not appear on stuff website looking proud in front of my car.

While he hasnt been convicted of dangerous driving but now his name will appear in any google search and might be an issue in his future...

That's not a serious speeding ticket. He would have lost his license and gotten a fine of $1,800 NZD in Norway for that kind of driving. In fact if you go more than 40 kmh over the speed limit (on 90 or higher) that's what you get.

I don't get why the penalty for driving over the speed limit is so low here. Given the death toll on NZ roads you would think those fines would be higher to keep people from being stupid.

The fine for jumping a red light is only $200 or so I think - and that most assuredly could kill people.

I agree that the fines should be increased by at least a factor of 10 and for more serious offences, your vehicle crushed if you do not pay in 14 days. Also we should have 100 times the number of cameras, and you should get points for camera offences too.

I have said before that part of the problem is caused by not having compulsory insurance: the effect on your premiums is so significant if you get done for speeding or drink driving that it acts as a massive deterrent aside from the issue of judicial sanction.

the penalty for driving 51k above speed limit here is loss of licence for ?28 days iirc

It's 40+k's over the limit, and this fellow got a 28 day suspension (he was 68k over).

Speeding fines (actually, all driving infringements) are too lenient here. Compare it to Australia (QLD anyway), he would have had a $1245 fine, 6 months suspension and 8 Demerits (of a possible 10). Another thing, in Aus, do something again within 12 months, and the demerits are doubled.

Interestingly, in QLD (maybe others) if you get a camera speeding fine in a work vehicle, the fine is 5x the standard unless the business nominates you (so that you also cop the demerits). Why don't we copy their system?

Looked like just tyres down to the steel belts making that noise unfortunately.

But I've never understood the desire to destroy a set of tyres in a few minutes by turning them into smoke. And I race cars. I'd rather have them stick to the road and wear out from lots of kms of racing than "doing a skid bro".

because although "speed was a factor" in a reasonable percentage of crashes it was not a causative factor in all but a very few. So it not sensible to fine people exorbitant amounts of money when they are not actually significantly increasing the risk to the road going public.
