I take that corner at about 70 due to cyclists etc

Fair enough then, the high center of gravity does tend to make things feel a bit more dodgy

They got rid of those lights and the rise some years ago. Now it's flat and smooth with no lights until Melling.

However, as a motorsport competitor, I agree on track/closed road only. It's so much nicer knowing that there's no-one coming the other way unexpectedly (usually).
Since I started racing, I'm much less inclined to be "racing" on the roads. Just too much to go wrong unexpectedly.

I've had that happen within the legal speeds when some muppet decided to pull out from Haywards and go to Manor Park at about 40-50kmh without bothering to factor in the minor detail of traffic going at or about 100kmh. It's amazing how much you can stand a car on it's nose to scrub off 3/4 of your speed in one heck of a hurry. That certainly got the adrenaline levels up.

xpd: Unless theyre being idiots by driving 60 in a 100 zone, then soon as you hit a passing lane they somehow find the gas and shoot upto 120 to prevent you from getting past them... then slow down again to 60 once the lanes merge again. Havent had that happen for some time now tho... and if it did, not much I can do about.

I have been known to follow people - especially campervans and inform them of their requirement to pull over at -every- opportunity and let people pass if they cant maintain 90km/h or know they are on a hilly road.
The occasional pull over every 10kms is not good enough and most dont understand they are required to at every opportunity to let others pass them.

I do most of my driving with the cruise control to prevent tickets now.

Is that really realistic? Sure, they should pull over if a queue builds up, but they have just as much right to be on the road as you do and it's not fair to make their driving experience so difficult that it makes their vehicle prohibitive to use at all.

the other way is to make the roads better for everyone. 2 lanes! is that realistic? well ... I'm happy to pay to use the outer lane!

Ha! Try passing one of those suckers with a truck & trailer...

I sometimes run through from Auckland to Kaitaia, fairly grunty truck, which unless fully loaded - maintains good traffic speeds except on steep hills.

I *always* let others pass whenever I can, slow down in passing lanes, run off the end of the passing lane onto the stripes and stop if there are still people passing. When the road's clear ahead I'll pull over and run my wheels on the edge of the seal (often scary) to give them a clear view, slow down & signal to pass if I'm 100% sure it's safe.. (timid drivers can make that a waste of time)

Camper vans are a nightmare. Putting along at 60-70km. Drifting over the road as they look at the scenery..

To pass them in a passing lane first I've got to drop right back. At exactly the right distance before the lane starts, hammer down and aim straight at them. If I've timed it right, just before I smash them to smithereens the lane begins, and I pull out and start to pass them. Then, assuming they don't suddenly speed up, watch the kerbside mirror for the trailer to clear so I can pull back in.

If there's any lane left, I slow down to allow others to pass me. A couple of times when I've done this, the camper van has pulled out and tried to re- pass me!

Often when I see a camper ahead of me now I just pull off the road, get out and have a stretch, let them get far ahead of me.
Of course, just as I climb back in the cab, another camper will drive slowly past...

When a truck does that with me at the front of the queue, unless you are obviously coming to a complete stop, or making a left turn, I don't bother and often block other cars from trying it on as well. If your truck ends up loosing control because of the scary maneuver, I sure as hell don't want to be next door to you. I also don't want to have to plant my foot in to the carpet to get past the dust cloud.

In other words...We're not timid, we are safe. If I can't pass within the space of the passing lane, it's obviously not safe to pass.

I dont run off into the gravel.. watching my mirrors lets me run my wheels along the edge of the seal. I don't want to get sucked off the road (and wreck my $200K truck either:)

The hard part is having one eye on your wheels, the other looking ahead for safety, and needing a 3rd eye to watch the passing vehicle...

When I'm driving my car, come up behind a truck which keeps left and indicates it's its safe to go I'll pass & give him a little “thank you” toot.

If, however, he ran off the road, showered me with gravel and chipped my windscreen I'd be showing him my special salute..

In practice it's very difficult to overtake legally because passing lanes and straights are short, slow vehicles speed up at both, slow vehicle don't often pull over and police don't often ticket slow drivers who fail to pull over.

What the law should allow and is the logical way to overtake, is:
- Shift into a lower gear,
- Give it some 'effing jandal'
- Overtake as quickly as the conditions allow, keeping below a ceiling of say 130.

Unfortunately this is illegal and not tolerated so I never-ever-ever do it that way. Back when it was tolerated a dozen cars could get past a slow vehicle on one medium length passing lane.

Addition: I driven >20,00km/year and have done so for about 20 years. I have only once seen a driver pulled over for holding up traffic. And that was an extreme case.

if i hold up traffic I will indicate and drive as left as possible when they can overtake, shoud they wish. if they then overtake i will slow down if they look like they are struggling to accelerate, otherwise i just pull a steady speed.

usually though i don't hold up traffic.
