How many friends do you have that are entrepreneurs? I'm guessing zero. Pretty easy to tell since you're quick to criticise and cut down someone down for trying. Musk uses resources from one successful venture to fund another. That's what serial entrepreneurs do. They try wild things. They're bold. They have to be. That's why they sometimes do and say stupid stuff. Comes with the territory of leadership. People with your attitude keep the world still. You opinions are borderline regressive.

To be fair there are just as many opinions on here that anything Musk does is great and anyone who criticises him is a hater. The same type of opinions that anyone who doesn't think an EV works for them now is regressive and that range concerns are a myth.

If your daily commute is more than 100KM, then a cheap and used Leaf might not be good for you. But there are lots of options now, and if you drive a lot a Tesla Model 3 might just be a car that will save you money over time, because running costs would be low.

The Cybertruck sure doesn't warrant range concerns.

There are many misconceptions about EVs, for instance a lot of people seem to think that they will need to fill up their EV like they do their ICE - at a "gas station".

For EV owners the place you "refuel" your car is at home, and you always start the day with an 80% full "tank of electricity", unless you have chosen to charge it to 100% because you are going far that day.

I think some of the reactions you are seeing are from people frustrated with some of the FUD that is being put out there about EVs.

That said. I have only ever rented EVs, I have a Toyota from 2011 and plan to keep it a bit longer. I do want a car with the range of the Model 3, but I am not prepared to take the cost of depreciation from buying a new car.

What is nice is that there are so many car companies coming out with EVs now. Even Toyota (well, Lexus) will be releasing an EV in the not too distant future. And I must say I like the look of the new Audi e-Tron Sportback:

Sure. A lot of the scepticism about EVs fall in the same camp though.

For example compared to a similarly priced (ie premium) ICE Teslas do generally have inferior build quality. They are also still very early in their production curve and Tesla haven't gotten their quality control right. Rather than acknowledging this it becomes a slanging match and then the valid points about EVs strengths get ignored because they are coming from someone who is not seen as objective.

I am not qualified to know, but EVs are not just Teslas. In the premium segment you have manufactures like Porsche, Jaguar and Lexus now making EVs.

Truely objective, no but practically objective, a lot.

It comes across to me as far more credible when people acknowledge other points of view, or product weaknesses, and then make a case for why they like what they like. When they immediately discount others reasoning they come across as unreliable and blatantly biased.

My whole view of EV's has changed over the last 6 months and this is becuase Ive researched them myself instead of listening to third hand accounts.......though other peoples opinions are important but you need to listen with an open mind.

I still do think that a lot of EV fans can be a bit over the top and the Cybertruck definitely shows this as there is no way that is the final product. Yep, 200k of people have put down a $100 deposit but I bet you a large percentage will already own a Tesla so in some regards sales will be going to the converted.

Anyhow, it does look fairly ugly and the size of it will rule it out for most users in NZ. While I like the cover on the tray, not being able to load from the side will be a big minus for a good work vehicle. There are a few other minor negatives which need to be worked on, such as crumple zones and protection for pedestrians/other road users. As noted by many users it was lacking a lot of basic items - side mirrors, indicators, wipers, etc.

Don't really see this design being the final product and it wouldn't surprise me if Tesla eventually come out with a smaller model for international markets.

Tesla reveals generally show what the final product will look like. If you look at the public reveals of the Model 3, X and S they really didn't vary much from the reveal to production. With the Model 3 I think one of the stage cars had the same handles as the S which was obviously changed. I wouldn't expect the Cybertruck to change much.

As for a smaller version of it, Elon has already mentioned that it's on the cards, but I wouldn't expect that for another 4-5 years.

Linuxluver: Many of the over 250K Cybertrk pre-orders are coming from places with low EV penetration. Looks like it's opening up new markets.

If the "pre-order" required some firm financial commitment, then yeah, but it doesn't - so nah. 

If you held some Tesla stock and didn't preorder one or more, you'd really be shooting yourself in the foot.
