My Corolla car needs a couple of new tyres - I put four new Firestone Firehawk TZ100 on a few years back, at the recommendation of Consumer magazone. The front have worn out, back still looking good. They're 195 60 15 size.

I can't find my last receipt for tyres, it's before I started scanning receipts. I got some kind of a discount but can't remember what. Looking around online it seems the prices are secret - that suggests to me there are massive margins in the tyre business and they're trying to screw as much money out of you as possible. I don't like having to call up or email to get a price, in all my businesses prices are online.

What should I be paying for a set of 195 60 15 TZ100 tyres? List price is around $170 I think, but I've found a grabone deal for $89 each. The TZ700 is their replacement, but the TZ100 will be fine if they're cheaper.

The firestone's have been fine but interested to hear if anyone has any opinions on brands or models.

NOTE - PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING: I don't need "tyres are important" advice, I know that. I'm not looking for cheap tyres. I'm interested in what good quality tyres should cost given there's so much difference between advertised prices and what the tyres are occasionally sold for.

consumer didnt test any firestone this time round

their top rated 195/65/15 tyre was the Kumho Solus KH15 ($126) followed by the GT Radial Champiro 228 ($169)

although not the size you are after its a good indication

im actually after new 195/55/15 tyres for my Honda Jazz so will be following this thread closely

Do they have prices for any brand in that size? I don't really care what brand it is, so long as it will keep me on the road. No idea if they should be matched with the rear or not.

Aslong as each pair ismatched (e.g you replace both front tires at the same time) you're fine with not having the front pair match the rear tires (taking into account both rear tyres are also matched).

To me tires are as important as airbags, ABS or ESP. Don't ever cheap out on getting good tires. I've got two very similar cars, VW Golf and Audi A3 and the difference in handling from the two tires the cars have is vast! NT5000 vs Eagle F1 A2. I'll be changing the NT's fairly quickly as although they are supposed to be good, they feel dangerous in comparison, especially in the wet.

My $0.02

This site has some really good reviews of tires per car type:

correct. tyres are the only thing holding you onto the road, changing your car's direction, or braking your car. nothing else.

We don't need this thread to be another "tyres are important, don't buy cheap ones" thread, that's obvious. I was asking about what good tyres should cost and why tyre companies are so secretive about prices.

no sorry the size i listed was the closest to what you wanted, and i included the price next to the name :) you would need to find out who does each brand

Thanks, the Kumho looks like a good tyre at a good price. I'll call up Tony's on Monday and see what they can do, otherwise I'll give tyreshoponline.co.nz a go - online seller who has fitters around NZ.

I always buy all 4 tyres at once because you can get better deal that way.

I replaced the original continental tyres with bridgie ecopia on the fiesta and I love it. I have done 15k with it.

I did that last time but my front tyres are very worn and the rear still excellent. Given that it would seem silly and more expensive to replace all four tyres.

Nope, I just drive it and leave others to worry about the details. The two front tyres really need to be replaced, I'll leave it up to the tyre store to decide where which set of tyres go.

I have found it false economy buying cheap tires.  I tried it just once, and they lasted just over a year! :-(
