Telsa launched in NZ on Thursday in Auckland. Eight NZ customers who had ordered cars via the NZ Tesla web pages in November received their cars at the launch. Tesla's store will be opening "in the winter" at 501 Karangahape Rd in Auckland. Hoardings are already up on the building.

Also announced was the opening of the first Tesla Supercharger installation in NZ in the undeground parking at Te Awa shopping centre at Te Rapa in Hamilton. Further superchargers will be installed at Turangi and Sanson later this year. (Te Awa supercharger photo by Justin Boyd on FB).

I was able to have a close-up look at the controls and dash of a new Tesla Model S. Also interested to find you can have two rear-facing seats in the Model S boot to provide 7 seats.

I also had a chance to check out the Tesla Model X 7-seater - front and back and inside - on Friday morning at The Grid in the Wynyard Quarter. Now I just need a bit more money. ;-)

Interesting the dealership is in Auckland and the first superchargers are in Hamilton....

Their cars have 300km (most basic model with 60kWh battery) to 570km (a P100 with 100kWh battery) of range......so having a charger 100km outside of Auckland effectively allows a Tesla car with 400km range to reach well into the rest of the North Island. Gisborne, Napier, Palmerston North and New Plymouth are all within reach on a single charge from Hamilton......and a P100D can probably make the 520km distance to Wellington.....or come very close (allowing for wind and hills).

I think 5 years from now this will be true of most new EVs. Batteries are rapidly getting cheaper.

Yes. They said Turangi and Sanson. That's all they need, really, given the range of their cars.....even the most basic 60D model. Their 120kw superchargers can charge their cars to 80% in under 30 mins. Those a re BIG batteries.

I now hope this silences the people so worried about peak oil and highway construction when a non-oil alternative is here now and will go mainstream (quickly I hope)

Did they talk about the cost of installing a charging unit at home?

I don't know the price of that, but I do know a 32amp charger (wifi-controlled / accessible and able to produce stats / reports) is about $1200-$1500 installed for any EV. Plus you have to get a sparky to install a dedicated 40amp circuit to the charging site / wall / room / garage. They can usually be indoors or outdoors.

Or you just install a 16amp blue commando charging point with isolator switch on a 20amp circuit. That cost me about $800 all up.

Or you just run a cord to a normal 10amp 3112 household plug and charge overnight. Good enough for any EV for daily commutes....unless you commute 400km / day.

This probably makes economic sense as they will only have people going distance (and fewer 'locals' doing freebies) and as mentioned above, still enable the distance drivers to go that little bit further to conquer our distance issues

Which is probably a good reason they need a decent supercharger in Auckland somewhere, at 32A you will squeeze 7KW/h, maybe 8+ out of 40A, so for a 60 you are looking at a full 7-9 hours, more for a 90 or 100.....

Also have the published prices for the S'Charger... A of Jan 1 its no longer a freebie for new buyers....

I think they announced each owner would get 400kWh / year for free. The idea is to encourage people to charge at home and then use their 400kWh for road trips. For a 100kWh battery car that would be about 2,200-2,400km of range?

The charges are modest. In the US it's 20 cents / kWh in California and 19 cents / kWh in New York......and they don't start charging for time unless your car finishes charging and you don't unplug within 5 minutes (I think it is). This is to discourage people treating the charging spaces as parking spaces....which some people had been doing to the intense annoyance of others. (Some people just can't help being selfish dicks).

I don't know the pricing here in NZ.

I sold my AU-based Tesla. It just wasn't a well enough built car and I didn't like it. The X isn't very good either. The promise is there, but so is the hype.

Also according to the images, they did not put up a sign board saying "only for Tesla " or something, coz there are some people who will still park there, as it is a shopping center i assume.

Have seen couple of illiterate people parking their fossil car at ev charging spots at sylvia park mall here in Auckland.

That is actually a good point. When you consider the number of people who are stupid/selfish enough to park in disabled spaces you would have to think that there will need to be some very strict enforcement for EV charging spaces.

Betting pool: They don't last a month.

Better location might be outside NZPOL Central Hamilton, at least the response time for the inevitable "Wilful Damage" et alia would be better.

I disagree, Te Awa/The Base is a very good place to put them as that shopping centre has pretty much killed shopping in the CBD.

Also in saying that once the Waikato Expressway is complete they will have to consider building a Service Centre somewhere along the expressway with EV chargers

I'm told these EV parks are about as far from any internal entrance to the mall proper as you can get.

The spaces are just asking for someone to park their F150 or SS-V Commodore in them, just for the reaction (we are talking the Waikato here). I would have thought putting them in a prime location within the carpark would help convince people that EVs are the way to go. Although the counter to that is there will always be some A-holes whose envy will lead to your beautiful new Tesla getting tattooed with a key, so maybe better to not have it too close to the door.
