Sorry if this was already discussed in the one of the long threads, I searched for "recall" under this forum and didn't see any so I'm putting this up.

Does anyone know what's happening to NZ's LEAF fleet with regards to this recall?

https://www.cars.com/articles/recall-alert-2013-2015-nissan-leaf-1420684057172/

I believe this is the same issue which one LEAF owner had in Auckland over on NZ EV Owners public group in facebook.

Does Nissan NZ or anyone else have the ability to apply the latest firmware?

I am looking into buying one, but slightly worried about support for anything software related, after all LEAF feels more like a smartphone than a car.

Call Nissan and ask.

I've emailed dealers around Auckland, but just waiting on responses, thought it's better in writing... if you call it that.

Will update when I get anything back.

Nothing in here: https://www.recalls.govt.nz/advanced-search/Form?term=leaf&Excluded=&StartDate=&EndDate=&Categories=0&action_doSearch=Apply

even though it's a govt, I'm not sure how updated it is.

For example the Takata Airbags which is so dangerous (it killed in the US), some Japanese car manufacturers are actually disabling airbags, such a huge recall isn't shown in this database...

How did you look for it?  I just searched nissan, and the first entry for an E25 Urvan, was talking about Takata airbags (from Oct 2016).  So I'd assume fairly up to date.  This is a relatively new site

I just contacted Manukau Nissan on their website, and gave them my car details, they are going to check if it's affected.  They seem "leaf friendly" - they offer a service package including checking for recalls, although software updates seem to be a notable omission, I guess the exception would be if related to a safety recall.

Hey you're right, just my car's lobbying power then!

I searched for Takata and it's pulling up results for Nissan, Subaru, Mazda, UD Trucks(?)

But there's an alternative link to an information website with more models

http://www.rightcar.govt.nz/airbagrecall

Anyway I digress, good that govt is looking out for us!

Were the affected vehicles sold here new?  If they weren't Nissan NZ has zero legal obligations.

Interesting - I remember getting contacted by Toyota about a recall on my imported Hilux, and I was the second NZ owner. I doubt that they would have done that from the goodness of their hearts, so it makes me wonder about your statement - definitely be keen to hear more about that.

From Manakau Nissan:

Hello Sir,

The recall you are speaking of has not been released to the New Zealand Market,

All imported vehicles are required to have any outstanding recalls carried out at place of origin (Japan) before departure from the country,

If you need to have this verified the responsibility lies on the selling dealer whom you purchased this vehicle from,

I hope this information helps.

The recall was released in the US back in March.  My albeit quick search indicates no such recall was issued in Japan.  Not sure about the UK.

That's a US recall for LEAF's made in the US. They refer to "very cold" temperatures. I guess you'd have to live south of Timaru or halfway up a mountain to seeany of that here. It is possible a Japanese import might have seen cold weather in Hokkaido prior to be imported here.

Latest recall update for brake issue with US LEAFs (PDF)

I would talk to Manukau Nissan. They have been supportive of LEAF's from anywhere.

I did :) see above your post.  The recall hasn't been issued here.  So it may only affect US sold LEAF anyway.

Thanks Linuxluver! That's a very good point, so I tried to find if there're any recalls in Japan for LEAF and fortunately there're only 2.

One for some Gen 1 for a pin under passenger side the other is for some Gen 2 where the engine start button might get stuck over time and they had to shave off a bit etc.

But it does seem there're some reports on the brake system, are you able to tell when the mechanical brakes engages?

Seeing it's possible it's not using the mechanical brakes a lot, is it possible to manually force it to engage say once a week or so to keep it in good condition?

Thanks for sharing this link! I didn't know this site existed so did some searching and found that my Toyota is affected by the airbag recall.  It's booked in to be fixed next week.

If I hadn't browsed this post I would never have thought to check and it'd probably never be fixed.

Off topic but if the NZTA have a database of our VINs and contact details, and the manufactures have a list of affected VINs, why hasn't anyone contacted me about this?

Was it bought/sold used by a Toyota branch at some stage?  The individual branch would then have CGA obligations.

It's possible that Toyota have a policy for the local distributor to handle recalls for all calls in their country, regardless of how they came to be in that country.  Makes sense from a reputation perspective.

If a particular car was imported into NZ by someone other than the NZ distributor they have no legal responsibility under the CGA - how could they?  They didn't supply the item or receive a single $ for it.

Analogous to parallel importing a laptop and then expecting the NZ distributor to warrant it.
