Further to the 4km/h tolerance thread, I think NZ police have stopped caring about policing the basic road rules.

 

This was riccarton today, a driver ignored an orange and went through the red without a second thought.

 

I travel just a small 20 minute drive to work, and 20 mins back every day, but see red light running at least once a trip.

 

I've seen multiple people run reds (second, third in line at lights turning right) in front of cops who are forced to wait on the green but do nothing whatsoever. 

 

I called the local station once, and asked what was being done and the police lady actually argued with me, completely unprofessionally and accused me running red lights myself and to stop complaining. (happy to give the dashcam audio/video to anyone who cares.)

 

Anyway, with the rising road toll, I think NZ police have their a$$ in the sky, and their head in the sand over poor driving behavior and just don't give a toss.

If you want to see some real red light running go sit at Smales farm..

A mate who works at Vodafone there see's a T Bone on the weekly. 

 

I always drive through there and see cops ignoring red light runners.
At times I have had my arm in their air like an Italian going 'mama mia' at police..

I agree. Speeding revenue collection seems to be the only thing the Police are interested in.

 

Also seems like many drivers consider stop signs to be the same as give way signs.

Remember. Politicians do not drive around all day and tell people off.

 

They have staff to do that. Who? Oh yes, them blokes that drive in cars and are told to wear a uniform that says police. To POLICE these thingees called LEGISLATION that the government come up with. Funny enough even have their own .govt subdomain website.

permanent speed limit means a maximum speed limit set by a regulation or rule made under this Act and that is in force except when a holiday, variable, minimum, or temporary speed limit is in force

 

I don't like the fact people keep referring to the task they are asked to do as revenue gathering. Yes, They may appear to go and ticket willy nilly for stuff thats in the book to do so. Because they are told to make the books look good with pressure from above. Same with you and I and RFPs and so on 

 

Similarly, not all patrol cars we see on the road are free. Or versed in the land transport act. So short of a 'bad boy' telling off often aren't interested in the abuse they get trying to enforce something they aren't specialised in. They may have the same car, but there is still a heap of separate divisions within. General duties, Roading Policing, Traffic Alcohol Group (TAG) and for a while in chc we even had the bikes doing strategic intersection safety

 

I regret the day they relabeled away from clear black/white MOT cars.

 

It's a sh1t job being a punching bag for NZs domestic violence. And I wouldn't wish it on anyone. (know of people that drop from PCol after realising how much scrutiny and garbage you are subjected to)

I'll agree with the OP.

The previous government's approach to too many problems was to reduce enforcement to save money.

I see this on the roads every day. No wonder the road toll is rising.

The additional 1800 police positions the new government is creating will help. But we need more speed cameras.

People running red lights is often a consequence of frustration. There are many intersections where, at best, 3-4 cars can turn right on the advanced green......even if one of the drivers isn't looking at their phone and wastes most of the green. I've seen people just run the light as "compensation" for other drivers not paying attention and delaying everyone behind them.

Remember you spoke to ONE person, who may have been quite busy solving a murder, or alternatively a lazy #$^#@ or even a non-sworn officer.

 

If you are seriously frustrated then call and speak to someone else or your local MP.

 

 

 

We are accepting poor service in our lives too much, be it from a retailer or a police officer. And I 100% agree that there is more to road policing than speeding, red light running, failing to indicate, unsafe lane changes, failing to give way all matter the same, if not more.

That intersection is so poorly designed, I too see regularly someone cruise through a red light (as opposed to red light running) they are looking at the intersection ahead and don't even look at the lights.

I don't know if its just me but I miss the days of the split between MOT and the police.  2 different departments doing 2 different things.  MOT was just roads and enforcing the rules.  Police where used for crime related stuff.

 

 

 

The issue is our roads and just "stuffed" a full change of lights does not clear the queues, they don't sync up and people have to start/stop/start/stop.  Don't even get me started on the "on ramp" lights that has only pushed the issue back to the streets around the on ramp and created confusing way to drive (talking about the roundabout at penrose and how cars coming off the off ramp wanting to go right now have to drive in front/across the path of other cars getting onto the motorway on ramp.  

 

I also have an issue with trucks at peak time, the motorway is packed with them these days, and they take up all 3 lanes, they are slow to start to move again and stuff up the flow of traffic.  If anything the trucks should be limited to the 2 left hand lanes unless those lanes are closed or blocked because of an accident.

The truckies can see over all your cars and wont bother moving and burning their clutch to gain 5M to stop again. The reason why congestion occurs is people are stop start stop start and every person down the line behind them also is affected by this.
The smart truck drivers that sit there and move at a constant rate are the ones that keep the traffic flowing.

I believe there is an institutional laziness and lack of creativity at both NZTA and Police Traffic management. They want two things: lower the road toll and to offer some measurable KPI to their political masters. By reducing speeds they can reduce the road toll even if the number of crashes doesn't reduce much. Still get plenty of mangled people but less will die. Infringement notices issued is an easy KPI.

 

It's unimaginative and lazy. The Waikato cop who wants to shift to counting interactions with the public has a far, far better idea. Make him the boss and sack whoever is in charge currently.

A few years ago there were some temporary lights near my house, and they were configured to give ~2 seconds' warning before going green (I think they showed red and orange at the same time). The result was several cars all sliding forward in unison, efficiently, when the light turned green.

 

I've never seen this configuration since.

I'd love to see pre-emptive timing as described above installed. Some of the UK features them I beleive.

 

The flip side is, it brings out the ones too keen to kick off and essentially put all those silly last minute guys at even higher risk.

 

Wholeheartedly agree however. With the inception of mobile phones/text messaging and youth comes with it laxed caring. I'm 15, wheres my car keys. No weekend driving with the parentals or the AA to learn the dos and don'ts. And later on, you don't take notice of any give-way or other rule changes and forget to freshen up with the legislation changes (fines, drink limits and so on) and it ends up being chinese whispers car driving style with habits passed on down the line and made even worse.

 

But as pointed out, the biggest killer I catch on camera, is those following too close. Merging or changing lanes last minute, purposely running amber (that's still effectively red..) and watching the traffic not the light phasing.

 

Of course you are allowed to COMPLETE your turn on a red light, (if past the white line) but you are not allowed to START to turn. Which is what people 90% push the limit on (theres an image depicting this somewhere). The idea of them changing yellows to allow for this scares the bejeebus out of me. It will only accentuate it.

They should install red light cameras with automatic $1000 fines and 50 points on all red lights.

It's a silly idea to add more lights just slow the switching and add a further delay between one light turning red and the other turning green which will reduce the risk of being hit by red light runners.
