Oh dear.

A week ago, Mike Hosking was making a point about speed limits.  His argument was sound, but he got a little carried away in his estimation of his own abilities.

Since joining Hampton Downs and taking my car round a track at 220km/h I have not crashed, will not crash, and have concluded I am vastly less likely to be in trouble on a track than I am on a road.

In the media business, making predictions like that is often considered to be invoking the "commentator's curse".  And it seems that Karma was listening intently to Mike's proclamation.

Mike Hosking crashes $140,000 sports car

...at least he's taking it with good humour ;-)

Yeah, looks like he kissed the wall at some point,

But it cannot have been that bad as the wing mirror was still intact,

He wasn't doing anything wrong, that sort of speed isn't illegal and also perfectly reasonable off road on a racetrack. Moreover, his "abilities" aren't directly relevant as it is reported that his brakes failed - in fact I think he did pretty well to come away with such low damage, after being caught in a corner at that speed with no brakes.

I'm not sure why karma comes into it?

Is the car a write off ...? Last time I checked a single track day insurance premium was about 1% of the value of a vehicle you intend to race for the day. So $1400 for one day. Excess about 10% $14000. So if he can get the car fixed for about $16000 all good. But then there is history depreciation the fact the cars been involved in crash and raced 40% off its value now.

It can tough decision when to get track day insurance or not. I skip track day insurance myself too. I say can I afford to write this vehicle each time I go out. Clearly the Hosking is the same just with $140k instead vs my paltry $7k

I was going to say "I wonder why?" - but the answer is too obvious.

What we do not know (well, I have not seen it reported) is whether for example he was forced off by the actions of other drivers, track conditions or other possibilities.

Not sure it matters, at least in terms of Karma

"Since joining Hampton Downs and taking my car round a track at 220km/h I have not crashed, will not crash, and have concluded I am vastly less likely to be in trouble on a track than I am on a road. Why? Because there are no idiots. There is respect and concentration and rules are adhered to, and – oh the irony – ever safer cars." - Hosking in the Herald 4th of April.

But as much as I dislike Hosking, a lot of the reporting is pretty disingenuous - for example calling him out for "Not having insurance", which of course no-one will give you on the track.

Serves Hosk right for racing a hairdressers car with soft brake pads.

A real man would have driven an Alfa Romeo Guilia Quadrifoglio.

A real man to prove he wasn't a poser would have acknowledged the provenance of the car as A Fiat Chrysler product painted it orange and a Confederate Battle Flag on the roof and stuck a Hemi decal on the side just like the General Lee from the TV program Dukes of Hazard.

Getting Kate Hawksby to ride shotgun in a pair of Daisy Dukes is probably beyond Hosks powers of persuasion

Well, I think if someone else rams your car off the road as you are minding your own business, or you hit oil or whatever, that is outside what he clearly intended but perhaps did not say IMV which would have added "through my own actions" after "will not crash". He was probably correct to say "vastly less likely" and should perhaps have left it there.

It's a rash promise of course. Even Schumacher crashed.

I saw one of those Guilia cars on Sunday when I took my wife to lunch. I don't think it was the extra fancy version - I'd never seen one before and thought it was very nice. It burbled nicely and was being driven by a man who could not park to save his life.

The Quadrifoglio variant is a real drivers car. A Ferrari derived engine and loads of carbon fiber.

If a friend owns one steal it and take it for a blat.

Even if it costs you the friendship it will be worth it.

I think Alfa's were summed up well by the three wise men of motoring who agreed they would love to own one but would never recommend one to friend - due to reliability concerns.

Because he is really good at winding people up and they take the bait. Every. Single. Time. I don't have much respect for The Hosk's intellect but he sure does know how to wind up the hand wringers.

But I also agree he should have had better brakes.  $10k might have bought him a decent brake upgrade.

His missus has started writing op-ed's in the newspaper, and they are actually very good.
