richms:Optical cant carry any of the new audio formats - its fine for stereo or highly compressed DVD quality 5.1 if that is all you are after.

Re: toslink being obsolete...
Not really, ARC is terribly unreliable, useless in many Custom Integration implementations and frankly... HDMI was terrible on the day it was launched and remains so today. Optical cables just seem to work...
Haven't had any issues with HDMI, ARC and CEC myself and they work very well together to make the experience very user friendly, however, I can accept that in some cases they may be issues with some components that don't work well together. When I had older equipment that didn't support ARC, I did use them. Having said that, I still believe that optical is still pretty much obsolete. Sure, you may use it for a return between a tv and a receiver that is too old to have arc working correctly, but, HDMI supports more features than optical does.
DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby TrueHD, Atmos etc can't be sent over optical connections, HDMI can support lip sync correction etc. Whilst you may use optical to work around some problems with compatibility, you wouldn't (shouldn't) be using them as often as in the past (ie the forward direction).
To keep on subject, I've been told the battery packs with 2D, 4C, 12AA and 12 AAA batteries were being sold for $2.50 at the DSE Levin store today. Very cheap.
The Sony DSC-W810 20.1 megapixel cameras are down to $99 now but even at that price they are not selling. They have a 6x zoom. Not a bad little camera for outdoor use in bright conditions and if you are taking photos of
slow moving traction engines or sleeping dogs and cats! No good for taking photos of your cat running towards you, which every cat seems to do the moment you point a camera at them!
There are great deals on NI-MH rechargeable D / C / 9v batteries.
A 4 pack of low discharge NiMH D size rechargeables go for around $7. That is 85% off, original price is up around $40 or $50. Similar deals for C size and 9v NiMH rechargeables.
I might go and buy the rest it was such a good deal.
Picked up a poweradapter (wall-wart) with selectable 4.5v - 12v output at 2.5A regulated for $11 (80% discount apparently).
Pretty good price I thought.
Did Eric Clapton really think she looked wonderful...or was it after the 15th outfit she tried on and he just wanted to get to the party and get a drink?
I've just bought my last items from DSE Featherston St;
DSE Ear buds $8.49 (50% off) - I left my everyday headphones at home so just needed a throw away pair I'll store in the bottom of my bag.
GoPRO LCD Touch BacPac $74.50 (50% Off) - The shop assistant said they found a couple out back and just put them on the shelf. There's 2 left if you're quick.
DSE Mini DP to DVI adapter $4.50 (85% Off) - I have a Surface so might come in handy.
I'm stoked about the LCD BacPac
Neddy: I see that as part of their receiver's sale, Dick Smith are offering Garmin 2797LMT GPSs for just $214.50.
This is an excellent price for a good quality mid-range 7" Garmin GPS.
Some people here would have paid over $400 for one of these
richms: Also the 8 pack of aa's is a good deal. 4 not so much.
There was a $40 charger at superxheap for D and C and smaller ones. Not got it since I have some us$20 ones on the way from aliexpress
Anyone know if a charger that charges the old NI-CD batteries, charge these newer batteries? I have an old sanyo one that fits C's and D's.
I can't see my local one staying open for many more weeks, as pretty much all they have got left is cables and cases and some batteries, and a few odds and ends. Staffing and rent/power I am guessing must now exceeding the amount they are making.

Different chemistry , different charge cutoff detection (not that the sanyo will have that anyway).
plus that old sanyo will be an overnight/trickle type charger, dont even try. Nicads are much more robust than nimah's .
get a good , intelligent charger.

Thanks, I thought that was the case.
Some prices have actually gone up in my local store! Among the men's grooming products, prices up by $10 on some of the items.
Other things are marked down considerably though - lots of 'red dot' 85% off, although mainly on obsolete iphone 5/galaxy S4 cases and RCA cables that are still overpriced even at 85% off.
Quite a few of the store fittings and furnishings have labels on them saying they have been sold
Only two staff manning the store. Playing rap music (uncensored!) - they clearly didn't care much one way or the other

When I last went in one of the staff members was dressed very poorly, and only two staff, so had to wait a while to be served at the till while they were showing people things. Also they only accepted cash, as they said there was a problem with eftpos. I guess the old iphone 5 cases will fit the new iPhone SE, so they are probably going to sell those ones.
