Logically it will of the guberment insists on trying to make them collect the GST. That's sometime next year but they might back off if it doesn't work in Australia. They might keep going as the local businesses will be quite happy with that outcome so will keep lobbing.

I did this myself not so long back, it doesn't matter if you break a few tabs cos you're probably not going to use the case anyway.

Just check the drive works first before doing anything that voids warranty.

Thanks I used my instincts, a drill, pliars and the cover came off. And to find 8TB really means 7.

Amazon has been collecting GST for a couple of years already. If it's likely to be collected by Customs, Amazon will show an extra line during checkout and charge the amount. If actual collection is less than calculated they refund the difference, if more they cover it.

That's true and the fact that they tell you in advance how much it's going to be is very helpful. The change is that the government is going to reduce the limit down to 0 and change gst on everything.

And since their systems already do the heavy lift, they just need to change the threshold and continue happily as before.

I think some things will actually get cheaper if they are between 400-1000 since there won't be the IETF and biosecurity levy

Considering Amazon never even had a NZ website and there's no clear signs there's going to be one anytime soon, what they did in Australia never automatically applied here. And since even in Australia they've changed what they were doing in less than 6 months plus are a massive business with all the resources to easily navigate any legal requirements, if they want to, we could only ever make a weak guess.

But yeah as mentioned the end of the levies and fees is likely to mean cheaper prices for anything $400-1000 from stores which do ship here. There was always a big price jump at $400 due to these and frankly this often made any deal a lot less worth it. I assume the levies are going to have to go up to make up for it, so $1000+ items will likewise get more expensive but they were always a smaller percentage of the transaction.

It's still slightly different as I think currently the GST is pre calculated but collected at the border, I think by the shipping agency. If it's not collected then you get a refund and I have had this happen. You never pay more than they quote but you might get a refund. The new change is that they will collect it at the source. Personally I don't really care because the GST on something cheap is only small and as Tzoi said you avoid the $40 odd in extra random fees.

I think Amazon is playing hard ball with Oz so that this doesn't become a trend. They are big enough to do this and sales into a small country don't matter that much to them. Amazon may not have a NZ web site or distribution center but they used to never offer international shipping and now it's on a majority of things. They are slowly taking over the world, after we are all lured in by the cheap prices and have crushed the competition they will be able to do whatever they want which is unlikely to be what we want. Until then I am hooked on the cheapness and convenience of the whole thing.

Clothing and shoes over $230 will also be cheaper than at present - you'll only have to pay GST rather than GST, 10% duty and the IETF fee as you do at present.

So at the end whatever the retail lobby wanted, backfired. Some thing will get even cheaper. And I will continue to buy shoes on Amazon...
