If you do a simple search on the main (US) HP dot com website for one of the model numbers (e.g. 5901), and click on the link that mentions "5901 support", you will find all the User guides, including the "Maintenance and Service Guide".
This Maintenance and Service guide is for ALL Stream 8 models, which questions the response given by the 'HP Support', because it states:
- All (three different) 58xx models have NO sim-slot/WWAN-antenna or module, while all (five) 59xx models DO have a sim-slot and WWAN antenna and module (including the 5909 from the Microsoft-store which is the 'signature edition', meaning it comes without all the HP-bloatware)
- The WWAN module in all 59xx models is the same, which is the Huawei MU739 (launched in 2012)
Jumping to the Huawei MU739. A simple search reveals that this is a:
- quad-band 2G (GSM/EDGE/UMTS): 850/900/1800/1900 Mhz, and a
- penta-band 3G (WCDMA): 900/1900/2100/850/AWS (being the 1700/2100 up/down-combo) MHz
However, this is on the hardware side only. The software may very well enable or disable any bands. Since the three 58xx models are for different regions, while the 59xx models come with five different main boards for 5 different regions respectively, I do not know all the implications of these 8 different main boards, but:
- The Service Guide states that the 59xx-models have EITHER 2G-850/1900 -OR- 2G-900/1800, and EITHER 3G-850/1900 -OR- 3G-900/2100, HP may indeed have chosen to disable some bands through software, or by means of those different main boards.
- Note that AWS is missing from the list, while a poster from Canada on the RedFlags-forum took a Stream 8 from the US to Canada, popped-in a sim-card from Wind Mobile, and he said it worked on the AWS-band (not confirmed, though).
- The 5901 and 5909 work on T-Mobile-USA, so they will very likely support all the 3G-bands that T-mobile offers.
Long story short, make sure you buy a 59xx-model from your region/continent, and you 'should' be fine in that region. While traveling to other regions is not confirmed to be working (yet), software-hacks are likely to follow if needed, but please don't take my post as the absolute 'truth' (note words like 'may', 'likely', 'he said', etc.). I'm just an enthusiast trying to help. Cheers, and good luck!
Edited: 4G is actually 3G, but since it's at HSPA+ speeds (21mbps), sometimes also referred to as 3.5G (not LTE, however!)
P1n3apqlExpr3ss:nathan: The US version has mobile broadband on 8"
And NZ stock does not have a 3G modem at all? Odd how those links and pbtech make mentions of a microsim slot; or is it just an error handed down from HP's specs?
edit: Thanks cokemonz for clearing it up

as far as I know, PB Tech are parallel importing this device, so technically its not NZ stock
roobarb: Cool, is it the HP Stream 8 model 5909 with SIM slot and GPS?
P1n3apqlExpr3ss: Just got a Stream 8 from JB tonight. I can confirm it it is the 5801TW model (no 3G) and comes with a 1 year iPass global pass. Nice device so far, happy to answer any questions

How useful is iPass in New Zealand really?
All comments are my own opinion, and not that of my employer unless explicitly stated.
CokemonZ: As a heads up, combo USB org Ang charging cables won't charge the stream.
I brought this http://www.banggood.com/4-In-1-Micro-USB-Power-Charging-Host-OTG-Hub-Adapter-Cable-p-947726.html
And the USB devices work fine, but it doesn't charge.
mAYH3M: Does the 1GB RAM gets in the way of fluid UI and how good it is at playing videos in Flash and Silverlight.
