lokhor:
divxmaster: Not that I've tried it, but apparently you can:

http://www.howtogeek.com/136404/how-to-install-windows-store-apps-to-an-sd-card-or-another-drive/

metro apps, ick, who uses those!!

:)

You used to be able to do it on Windows 8, you can't do it on Windows 8.1 though.

not supported in 8 or 8.1, but this will work in Windows 10

it will be in the upcoming Windows 10 Preview build released in late Jan

divxmaster: A couple more points, The insignia flex 8 only has 16gb internal storage, but a nice sandisk UHS1 128gb microsdxc will fix that.
This is very new from what I can find, released around 15 Nov. Not many reviews yet. From a more technical perspective, this device probably requires
compression of winsxs (@ freitasm, hehe), blackviper service modification and NTlite custom os.

WinSxS is not a normal folder. 90% of it is the same files Windows use. Thus it does not take extra space. Normal space measurement tools do not know about hardlinks or cannot reliable count them.

@stan, thanks, it will be great to see if it runs, I remember running crisis on a very low end vid card, with custom tweaks... something to do with
forcing it to use dx9 instead of dx10, but it was a long time ago!

@lokhor, yes you are certainly right about win8.1. Ive spent the last 6 hours trying to get it to work. good old 0xd000002b8 error. even tried creating a vhd and mounting it as c:\program files\windowsapps.  There is one user on xda-developers who says he has got it to work, posted on 14 Dec 2014. Have requested more info.

@Nathan, lol, yes I know winsxs is a mess of symlinks, that post was for freitasm (before he mentions it filling up!!). Still I need to one day add up the total used of everything else, ignoring winsxs and take it off the drive size and work out how much is actually in winsxs. Been meaning to do this for 2 years or so.

Anyway, contrary to many posts out there, you sure can install non metro apps on the sdcard in win 8.1.  I have office 2003 installed that way, and it loads
word/excel in about half a second. only class 2 card too. Most of my apps will be non metro, games etc.  Metro apps will probably be Internet explorer only, so space will not be an issue, I will remove the preinstalled metro apps to create more space also.

As a side note, I have ordered the Insignia flex 8 from ebay, delivered = $NZ188. Will open new thread when it arrives (presuming there isn't one already, I haven't looked).

Cheers,
Divxmaster

I have managed to finally fix the winsxs space problem, well as much as you can,
under windows 8.1. My original REAL used space in winsxs was 2gb and I managed to get this
down to 581mb. you can check the real space used using dism.exe.  I want to post this info,
but want it in the correct forum?

Anyone know what is best?  Although there is a separate forum for android tabs, ios, and windows phone 7,
there isn't one for windows tablets.
Maybe Laptops and Mobile?

I also want to post info (once I work it out) on blackviper windows services setup, selective ntfs compression
of C:, possible custom OS with NTLite, and really anything that makes the footprint of windows tabs less.
Also, my insignia 8" tab has shipped, so start a topic for this.

Cheers,
Divxmaster
