Sounds like some sort of compatibility issue where the device and AP are not quite working right together with band steering detection. i.e. devices without 5ghz maybe aren't setup to work with band steering, they dont know how to say no keep me on 2.4 not 5

well my phone has both bands, but my wifes only camps on 2.4 for some reason even with band sterring. Mine is sometimes on the 2.4 band and the rest of the time on the 5.
my laptop and iPad have no issues.

At work I'm creating 3 SSIDs on the Cambium.
Due to my experience of Band-steering at home, I'm wondering whether I should split out some of these networks at work and create say, a Staff24 SSID which is the single band 2.4 version without band-steering. I think most 5Ghz devices will cope with the band-steering, so I don't think I'll need to create a partner single band Staff5 SSID for 5Ghz. The other option is to drop band steering, and just have Staff5 and Staff24 as single band SSIDs.
The issue is I'm not always around at the office when someone needs access, so the keys might be given out by someone not able to troubleshoot, so I need it to "just work" with easy to pass on instructions.
Anyone done the thought exercises on the pros and cons of these workarounds, or have an opinion?
I had similar issues and research of the web indicated this is a problem with Android and it is how it is. Best option is to stand up a 2.4Ghz SSID and just connect to it when required. I use 5Ghz throughout and have a 2.4Ghz for the PS4

In July v3.0 will provide a user configurable band-steering-aggressiveness which might help. ie you can tune it down and see if it helps.
Release 3.0 won’t be out in beta until near end of June.
If you like you can log a formal case via support@cambiumnetworks.com and send us a tech-support dump from the AP so we can see the logs and check why those particular devices are having trouble connecting?
We do test with a number of devices in the lab, but with phones there are simply too many of them out there, all with minor behavioral tweaks.

How does the band steering know if a device is able to do the 5GHz channels that the AP is operating on? If you have multiple in a site is it smart enough to work out which ones cant do the middle and upper band?
atleast in my testing, it seems that it is simply a brute force bandsteering system, where 2.4ghz connections are dropped, this gets tricky when the device tries to join multiple bandsteering aps at once, one drops it and it tries the other one. end up with entries in the unconnected clients list while it decides the right frequency.
im excited for the new update, as it sounds like it will add some more tunable features.
I have recently been having odd issues with clients dropping from an AP sending error code 3 (AKA, AP has disappeared) over a wide range of devices. Eventually i pulled everything back to more default settings and dropped a few power levels and that seems to have settled on my Test SSID so we will see.. at first tests though, it seems far more happier although not quite bulletproof yet.

I'd hate to know how they do it in the building I work in. From where I am sitting I can see 10 enterprise grade Cisco AP's in the same space of what my house size is. Must be hell to configure.

As you mentioned earlier, the APs have power levels set very low to keep the cell sizes as small as possible to prevent AP stickiness. It does seem overkill to have as many in such a small space unless, a:) there is a requirement for high throughput, ie, fewer users per AP allows faster throughput, b:) some of them are configured as WDS/standby APs, and don't allow connections from clients (look for blue LED instead of green, if I recall correctly), or c:) it is an area with a high number of clients operating in it. As the AP's are Cisco, they'll be connecting back to a WLC that is probably set to auto manage channels and power levels (and 'CleanAir' spectrum sniffing to avoid non-802.11 interference).

Yeah read them after I posted. Also slightly disappointed but does seem to fix the channel issue which was discussed at length
