We have the SP4's at work rolled out this year.  I think every single one has been replaced already, or close to it.  I am on my 3rd in less than 12 months.  Rubbish 

 

Back on this thread, I was at HN last week looking to by a particular piece of home theater equipment worth $500, when the salesman gave me a sly nod and wink to wait until boxing day.  Been excited for a week to find out what massive deal they would be offering and how much I was going to be able to save, being grateful for the insider tip.  Sale price saves me a whole $11  

 

 

 

Boxing day sales ain't what they use to be...sigh 

 

So here's what is happening in the retail space...

Black Friday / Cyber Monday have become 'a thing'. This makes for a BIG few days for retailers towards the end of November. They are obviously very happy about this, but they also know they've trained people to wait for the few big sales every year (Boxing Day, Labour Day, Black Friday etc) and they get desperate to maintain turnover and avoid putting all their months sales into one 'Boxing Day shaped basket'.

Soooooo... they discount aggressively during December, they try all sorts of short stunts from gift vouchers with purchase, volunteer community deals, discounts, big finance terms etc. Basically it's regular marketing activity but on steroids.

So in reality, most of the prices can be found around Boxing Day levels during the month of December.

Sure there'll be 'Door Buster Deals' during the Boxing Day sale, heck, some products won't actually go on special until day 3 or day 4 to attempt to gain some sort of continuing momentum... but ultimately, Black Friday and Cyber Monday (a retail invention) has cut the retailers lunch, whether they like it or not.

Admittedly it's not personal experience for you, but assuming you believe me, I have a SP3 (i5/8G/256) that has been perfect in the couple of years I have had it. Not a single gliltch - autoupgrades to new version of windows and FW updates have all been seamless.

 

Surely you understand that if virtually every surface device failed, they wouldn't actually sell them, right? It doesn't matter how big you are, if you have a product line with a 100% failure rate, they will stop selling them - to think otherwise is willful ignorance.

I didn't state they have 100% failure rates across the board. I clearly stated, that of devices I have PERSONAL knowledge of, we have greater than 100% of failures. 

If you do a quick google you will see PLENTY of evidence to support the fact that Surface is one of the computing devices with the highest failure rates across the board. Internal memo's put it at >25%. 

I am sure there are some people who have good experiences, and that's good for them, but based on my experience, I'll advise people to stay away. There is plenty of choice in this segment of the device market.

Think I’ll wait for a possible New Years sale

A lot of the Boxing Day sales seem to be more focused on clearing out old or end of line stock

Every time over the last few months I have wanted something from Briscoes I have checked around as much as possible and I think that even with 60% off, they are still the most expensive source possible for many things. No wonder the boss can afford to at least want to use his Helicopter from his home helipad every day.

I've noticed this too... WTF is going on? HN normally has the best deals on Boxing Day...

Quite a few of the items that I was interested in aren't even on special and the ones that are, are more expensive than on Black Friday. And there are no "Door Buster Deals" to grab our attention either.

This years Boxing Day sales are a disappointment.

I've got alot to buy aswell, as I'm currently building a new house (at the painting stage), so was looking at new TV, furniture, appliances... Might hold off now to Waitangi Day. Or just buy through HN commercial closer to completion.

After looking at the mailers and visiting both stores I was actually thinking the exact opposite - Noel Leeming seem really expensive on a lot of products.

Slightly annoyed that I didn't get in on the $69 Seagate drives on sale a few months ago. Those WD drives have the SATA-USB interface built into the drive, so if the interface goes bust, then your data is pretty screwed.

Yeah, 1TB doesn't really drop below that. Much better value to be had with the larger capacities

It's Briscoes, so there will be a New Year's sale, a Waitangi sale, an Easter sale, a random week of the month sale... They run the same "up to 60% off!" sale every other week, just with different product ranges getting the discounts. That, along with their comically inflated RRPs which enable those discounts, is their entire model. Your item will come around again

kiwijunglist: Any good deals on bbqs. I'm keen on a large premium weber and small smoker or a large oil drum type offset smoker. Must be reasonably rust resistant come with covers as i will store outside.
