Or could someone post a close up picture of the cable connections?

If it is like the MDR-ZX770BN it’s a 3.5mm plug but has a funny profile on to go into the socket. I got some 3rd party cables from Amazon that work but it’s hard to find anything local.

networkn: ... Is the cable supplied proprietary?

Interesting. I was unable to use my 3.5 mm cable when I went to listen-test XM2s. Assumed it was due to a combination of the padding on my 3.5 mm cable jack and the way the socket is recessed.

Perhaps it's the replacement cable @networkn? e.g. try another cable?

I've tried plugging a couple of 3.5mm jacks (from other headphones) into the XM3 and both fitted well.

For anyone flying soon these are $399 at duty free. Guy behind the counter reckoned they’d been $379 but they decided it was to cheap.

For ex-XM2 owners, now XM3 owners, are the XM3s noticeably different/better than the XM2, or are these a marginal upgrade?

Hopefully they charge them, takes ages the first time and would want to use them soon if purchasing in duty free!

Thanks for the tip! Got my fiancee to pick some up for me at on her way out of Auckland at duty free yesterday so can confirm they're still at $399 and seemed to have plenty of stock. Pretty stocked cos I managed to sell my Bose QC35's for not much less than that on Trademe's no success fee day. Now I just have to wait for her to get back from her trip so I can try them out..

they have got a U shaped frequency response, well maybe not U shaped but it goes bass >> treble >/= mids

but they are very clear, I've things I've never heard before wearing these things.

hope they last. coz they're certainly not cheap!

bump: I'm keen for any feedback on differences between the XM2 and XM3? I tried a pair of XM3 on at Noel Leeming and fit felt tighter than my XM2, as well the band extension felt less sloppy. As well as fit and construction, I'm keen to hear about noise cancelling and overall sound quality compared with the XM2. ta

To be honest, musically they are about the same, but comfort, ear sweating, noise cancelling and the variable NC ability based on the activity, I think they are well worth the upgrade. The gesture controls are better too.

Depends on budget I guess. I don't mind spending money on these sorts of things if there is a killer feature I want, but everyone's value systems are different.

I have both the XM2 and XM3 and while I haven't put them thru a rigorous listening process (the XM2 belong to my wife, she got them first and I had to copy with the XM3) I find them to be pretty similar. Perhaps the atmospheric hiss effect you get with NC is less noticeable in dead silence on the XM3 but it is completely gone on both once the music has started. I would say NC is a bit better on the XM3 but I think in terms of an upgrade maybe not worth the price?

Fit feels similar, buttons are easier to find and push on the XM3. I prefer the XM2 in terms of the actual look - with leather texture on the cups and a bit of metal in the banding. But overall the XM3 are sleeker.

Oh also the XM3 have a deeper and more comfortable ear cup in my opinion. But I didn't have any problem with the XM2 comfort before buying the new ones

The 3.5mm is not the issue with the headphones, the jack itself is physically recessed into the earcup. You need a plug that almost as thin as the metal part of the jack to plug in. It's otherwise a standard port although I havn't tested to see if its a TRRS port or not since I can't seem to find a cheap TRRS cable around here.
