I ended up getting a new dyson vacuum. The clearner told me the other day that the current vacuum head was stuffed.

Went to Noels and they did price match HN on the following so got it $20 cheaper than what the website says. Tried it out when I got home and need to remember to tell the clearner not to put in onto max as when i tried I could not move it due to the suction being so strong.

I have not really had price matching problems with noels, if they say no then i would just go somewhere else and I make that clear to them. I find JBhifi really good for returns and price matching. HN is ok, sometimes they have really good deals (i did get a laptop from them for $800 off the ticket price and the guy said it was way under their cost price as well, never seen it again for the price I paid).

No problem, the old vacuum is also a dyson and about 10 years old, still going strong apart from the head. But like all things that old trying to get replacement parts (a new head) was an issue. Just went for a new vacuum due to the price :)

From what you said about the suction, does the head have wheels, so that when you are on carpet it doesnt feel hard to push?

top tip: a very handy feature is the ability to passthru hdmi from source to tv when amp is off. :)

Only had a quick play yesterday however if the suction in on min then it's easy to push and works well on both carpet and hard floors, its when i pushed it up to max that it stopped dead on the carpet. I was surprised at how much it did pick up in the short 2 minute play on min setting. I also really like the easy to eject waste system.

Staff have no idea what the true cost of product is so you can always take "we're selling it below cost" with a grain of salt. There is no way any retailer would be dumb enough to load their true cost (which includes all rebates from the manufacturer/distributor) into their POS systems.

What retail staff see if what the head office wants them to see.

The great thing about the space right now is there are plenty of retailers all begging to take your money. The fact Noel Leeming don't want mine is their loss, not mine!

Anybody who walks into a store and happily pays the ticket price on a big ticket item is a fool.

Most specs on amps are total BS. Just lies .
THD will depend on power, freq its measured at etc etc . Specs often give meaningless ratings , eg power rating with one ch driven , eg power rating thats not RMS just to make it seem better specced .
Chances are your speakers will be around 1% distortion anyway
Look at power with 5ch driven compared to its power 2 ch driven that will be a better spec to look for. A 100W amp may drop to 25W all 5,7 ch driven.

Also, low THD has nothing to do with actual sound quality, its not hard to get stupidly low THD, often at the expense of sound quality
Ive built kitset amps that had .001% dist, did they sound any better...not really.

...and to top it off, the 5 channels driven spec is all but a waste of time. When did you last send the same signal to all 5 speakers in a room?

Most of the work done by your receivers amplifiers comes from the front 3 speakers. To top it off, a majority of relatively sensitive theatre speakers won't ever demand more than 10-15 watts of power.

You'll get a deal on most brands this Boxing Day period... except for Onkyo. Pioneer and Yamaha are on special at Harvey Norman, JB's have Sony on special, AV World will discount Denon and Paul Money will do deals with Yamaha as they're consolidating and going back to one store... so I'd try there first as they have the biggest reason to clear stock.

Thanks. I have a 4 way speaker that goes down all the way to 28Hz (?@-3-6db??), and it's lower than most subs. My last sub was an HSU ULS 15 :D but it woke up all my kids and wife was angry and neighbours moved out! - note: may or may not be related to the ULS 15 (THat is with it turned down because the auto calibration made the sub clip every scene, must be my thin walls, high ceiling and open plan). Long story short I now channel all low frequencies to my front 2 speakers :D

And my AVR blew up during a very LFE heavy scene.

So I'm looking for another sucker I mean AVR that have separate amps for each channel, say, so I could try biamping my fronts .... what do you think?

All the receiver brands offer what they term 'discrete amplification' where it can ensure the channels that need the power, get the power.

However...

A few things.

1: Don't worry about passive bi-amping, this is where you use channel 6/7 and connect them to the tweeters on your stereo (left/right) speakers. They're drawing their power from the same power supply, so it's largely a waste of time and speaker cable.

2: If your speaker goes down to 28Hz, I'm picking it won't be close to flat when doing so. If it is, what are the other specs (sensitivity, nominal impedance, minimum impedance etc).

3: If your front speakers really are that thirsty and you are trying to get that much bass through them - then you need two things.

a) Subwoofer(s) - they will obviously take the load off the front speakers / AVR and will allow your AVR to drive the mid-range of your loud speakers a lot better. Remember, adding 2 subs = 6db in volume, 3 subs 9.5db and 4 subs 12db extra.

b) A power amp to run your front speakers - so you'll need an AVR with pre-outs for the front channels... be prepared to pay more or pick up a second hand AVR to go with your AVR.

c) Room correction software that is far better than what you're currently utilising. Whether it be ARC, Dirac Live or an external box that handles your room correction, it sounds like there's room for improvement in what you're doing...

Slightly annoyed that I didn't get in on the $69 Seagate drives on sale a few months ago. Those WD drives have the SATA-USB interface built into the drive, so if the interface goes bust, then your data is pretty screwed.

Generally good to stay away from Western Digital anyways.

Can't find the study at the moment, but there was one where people rated vacuum cleaners higher if they made more noise (despite suction being the same). Sort of on the topic, https://www.mnn.com/your-home/at-home/blogs/inefficient-vacuum-cleaners-be-swept-european-stores. I generally find minimum suction is fine and less aggravating but it seems a lot of people want a knob that goes to 11.

It's 50% off - down to $694. Would love to get it but can't win the WAF issue - our current lounge does not lend itself to a home theatre setup... thinking I might have to tide myself over with a soundbar of some sort.

It all probably depends on the staff member who you get on the day.

I know when I worked at mitre 10 the managers always said make it easy as possible for the customer to get a price match be lenient but some of the staff didn't pay attention to this.

I was in Whangarei Mitre 10 a few days ago trying to get them to price match and discount vis-a-vis the usual few-cents-cheaper Bunnings price.

This particular store seems to have a real problem honoring their 15% price match guarantee. Three times now on requesting the discount their system price has magically matched the Bunnings price, down from the advertised label price, meaning they can avoid the 15%. When pushed on the advertised price, they try to claim it's been recently 'updated' in their system, then wait to see whether I accept that. When that fails, they revert to insisting on phoning Bunnings to 'check', even when the Bunnings live website page is being shown to them on a phone - and Bunnings of course never answer.

I stood there on principle this time for 20 minutes occupying about 3 of their staff while they repeatedly called Bunnings until they finally got an answer.

Then it took them 10 minutes to work out how to actually alter the checkout price.

Check the website page the next day, advertised price has not been changed at all like they claimed.

Fairly sure now it's deliberate strategy. Never had a problem with Mitre 10s in Auckland.

Mitre 10 is no different here, and we're in Auckland. Bunnings tend to put altered pricing labels on items they've discovered are available cheaper elsewhere, to save the staff from the hassle of dealing with keen-eyed customers.
