Don't forget that the advertising says that discounts are off the original prices, not the current RRP. If something was originally sold 10 years ago at $90 and still in stock, then that's what the discount comes off, not whatever the 'normal retail' price was last year when things weren't messy.

That's not how the law works - basically it the price that it was selling for over the past 6-8 weeks is considered the normal retail price is what you use to determine the discount offered.
It's misleading to do otherwise unless the advertising is exceptionally clear (and obviously it isn't since this is being discussed now)
Since they are reducing prices steadily I'd would say it was discount should be advertised using he price the goods were at the time the receivers took over and the prices went back up.

You can't advertise a discount based on a RRP 12 months ago.

Regardless the receivers are safe in reality as when (if) they have any investigation finished it will be to late...

Ok, spending way too much time on this for a joke post, however,

I could only find the 3m optical cable. I am assuming that the 3m one is / was more expensive that the 2m one.

According to the wayback machine, the 3m ds tos-tos cable was 29.98 on 21/1/15 and $32.98 on 9/3/15. Inflating the price of the cable (again, I am assuming that they didn't triple the price in store on an obsolete cable technology (HDMI, ARC etc) in the second half of the year) to $90 does seem to be against the fair trading act. Some further reading about pricing and discounts is below.

I'm sure Briscoe's must have a whole department dedicated to ensuring that they don't breach these clauses.

Anyway, I'm still not buying $20 hdmi cables marked down from $40 that were being sold for 50c before Christmas.

I found myself in Wellington city last Friday evening with an hour or so to spare. As the Sony store had closed its doors on Thursday I wandered into Dick Smith in Featherston Street. Absolutely nothing left in there I would buy, even if the prices were more, er, "realistic". I felt kind of sad when I walked out...

Absolutely. I've never said their claimed 'original' prices were legitimate, just putting their statement out there (as noted on their advertising). Of course if they're making prices up then they probably should be taken to task by the comcom. At no point have I disputed this or any claims of inflated pricing. Up to you (as a consumer) to decide if you want to take them to task or not. Personally I can't see the point. Just don't buy from them. It would take some convincing to get me to spend any money there! They're a waste of space and this whole thing is getting dragged out far longer than it should have.

(The only way they're going to clear their massive stock of cables and own branded products in a timely fashion is to sell them at that magical 50c each!)

Got this for $22 when the dollar was good. I think a lot of the apparent price gouging sentiments comparing it with last year has got to do with the lousy exchange rate.

They may have changed since I last brought one, worst aerial I've ever used. Just that bit much too cheaply made. Very lightweight metal that bends if you look at it. Hockey stick poorly designed with wingnuts that need to be done up super tight to overcome oval pipe. The 10m coax feels really bad, had a cheap plastic outside that tears easily and cracks if you bend it too much (yes, I know you are not meant to bend it). I have no expectation of it surviving outside conditions.

Having said that, it is still working at the beach house, however, I still worry about it every time I think about it (which I try not to do).

7AH, 12V batteries are cheaper than I can buy elsewhere though. The one I brought had a date of 070813 though...

I agree, would never put it outside ( no matter what the box says) , only in the roof space :) Have put a couple in for mates over the years in the roof space and works perfectly fine

And for $20 is good to have just for the Friday night "we forgot to check for an aerial before we moved in and now want TV" scenario :D

Re: toslink being obsolete...

Not really, ARC is terribly unreliable, useless in many Custom Integration implementations and frankly... HDMI was terrible on the day it was launched and remains so today. Optical cables just seem to work...

Optical cant carry any of the new audio formats - its fine for stereo or highly compressed DVD quality 5.1 if that is all you are after.

I just bought a TOSLINK to mini-TOSLINK cable today for our Chromecast Audio. Certainly not obsolete, but finding the mini-TOSLINK wasn't as easy as finding standard cables.
