pleccy: On a 16GB ipad, they make around $20 gross profit. Retailers get soft dollars in rebate if they hit a certain quarterly revenue target. If they are falling short of their revenue target it can sometimes be worth them losing money on the ipad itself. Apple margins are razor thin.
