I found this by accident last night while giving the Geekzone Broadband Switch site a run. Great tool, do check it out.

The deal is the following: 12 month term, UFB 100/20 Unlimited @ $44.98 (per month) for the first six months, then $84.95. Includes basic VOIP landline plus free modem/router rental. Termination fee is $249.00.

Works out at $794.53 over 12 months or $66.21 per month (that includes the $14.95 modem delivery fee). That's a steal in my book.

Looks like the same deal applies for any ADSL/VDSL connection.

Offer available until the end of October.

It's Orcon thou.. It's a company that's got a fairly poor reputation around here for both customer service and provided service, and it's billing issues have even appeared on Fair Go.

I wouldn't go near them with someone else's ten foot barge pole to save a few $$, YMMV.

A lot has changed since then. Basically a new company now.

Agree re customer service, but the provided service itself is stellar.  That's why I've stayed with them for so many years, even through a few major relationship issues.

Long time Orcon customer here and will be the first to say their customer services is pretty bad, however in my case they definitely make up for it in terms of reliability and network performance and due to that I've rarely ever had to call them.. maybe 3 or 4 times over the past 7~ years

Their techs on this forums are extremely helpful too

Since when? They screwed up everything possible when I had some issues and then subsequently tried to leave earlier this year.

Clearly I'm biased, but I reckon you'd be pleasantly surprised by some of the improvements we've made recently. We've had new owners since then, and have invested heaps in our self-service and support models, including buffing up our email team so that emails are responded to real fast, and with more improvements coming soon! We also have a new billing platform, and our customer satisfaction stats are rising and we plan to continue that trend.

Thanks for posting this, just rang Voda to match it, couldn't but gave me 300 credit on account. Which works out 69 per month for unlimited phone and VDSL, can't get fibre where I am unfortunately

hi,

I just joined Orcon last month. I left 2degrees ADSL to get fiber with a temporary ADSL connection.  I was with out internet for 1 month while they were trying to get ADSL connected. I would have thought Chorus would have just switched 2degress gear for Orcon's gear.  Then the speed was worse than dial up.  And then, the VOIP phone service was not working.  I had to make so many calls, waste so much of my time to get it all sorted.

They did not even send the fiber request to Enable until the ADSL was connected. Why the 1 month delay?   I have known people to get a new fiber install in less time than it took Orcon to install ADSL.

Also, the router they send you is old crap that doesn't even do 5Ghz wifi.

This is what their service is like at the current time.  I advice anyone else not to join them.

I'm really sorry to hear this. To be totally clear, this isn't indicative of our normal service levels.

PM me with your account details and I'll make sure we get all of this straightened out.

Cheers,

Cam

hi, Cam,

Mostly all sorted now, thanks.  Hence my ability to post to Geekzone.

When do Orcon normally send out the request to Enable for fiber?  When the order is placed with Orcon or once the temporary ADSL connection is established?

Do your standard routers have 5Ghz wifi or did I get an old one?

Paul

I have been with Orcon for some years and have had a few problems. The biggest is getting past their overseas helpdesk. It is really a brick wall.

However if you can get past that and contact the Auckland based team the service is excellent.

Just endorsing other's views with my personal experience:

- Service quality is reliable and consistent, in terms of both availability and performance

- When dealing with offshore support in the past it has been painful and inefficient (really frustrating at times)

- The unofficial support from Orcon through Geekzone has been excellent - the guys here have retained me as a customer despite the odd issue that has been beyond the ability of the formal offshore team.  Helpful, knowledgeable, and able to resolve issues.

It sounds like Orcon have, and continue, to take steps to improve customer service which is great to hear.

Cheers.

Been with Orcon fibre for over 5 years and have been most grateful for the help of bameron and sounddude for the odd problem.

The accounting problem I have had has been sorted so I would say forget that part as history.

Fibre performance has been extremely consistent any time of the day and night at 94/21.

Price is also very competitive.

But, yes, the router does not have 5Ghz wifi. I have it available from a 659b used as an AP but, frankly, I can't tell any difference in performance between that and 2.4 in practice. At 73/18 on 2.4 it will stream Netflix with no problems.

And to finish off, is there an ISP that hasn't had bad news stories on their thread?
