Given we have a fairly average record in the starts, it's doesn't bode that well for us. Hopefully, we can improve our tacks and starts.
I did think it was interesting TNZ looked like with another 800m they might have got past LR last night. It was a very close finish.
Yeah, Jimmy seems good at starts. Like Formula 1 you have a faster car you catch up, but when you hit the dirty air, the car loses downforce and grip, and in the case of these boats, the wind pressure on the sails is probably less and also a bit inconsistent form unsettles air, you lose speed. Its quite a good analogy

I wouldn't read too much into that. Jimmy knew that TNZ didn't have enough course left to catch them so cruised home. He is the king of mind games after all.

And as we know with Jimmy, it's not over till the fat lady sings.
What happens if a crew member falls off the boat? Does the boat need to cross the finish line with all it's crew onboard?

From talking to a fan, yes. A better question would be; how far can the boat go without the crew member? Otherwise , why not just pick 'em up on the next convenient leg.

I mean it makes sense I guess, otherwise, in a tight race, 1000m from the end everyone offloads from the boat making it a bit lighter :)

lol, i can imagine someone would try that.

It's probably a rounding error against total weight, but still :)
ETNZ roll tacking is actually fast, but will Luna Rossa allow it?

A bit more detail analysis from MozzySails on TNZ tacking and foil angle differences.
Though it really looks like it is a battle to get a good start, and then capability to be good enough to stay ahead that iskey in this type of race.
Light fluky winds may have everyone wishing they had a fast displacement mode.
Maybe next innovation would be flapping foils like wings/oars.

Nice video, I understood most/some of it, more like some :-)
"Its Complicated" as the saying goes. Interesting that it shows they gained on an upwind tack in that one example even though commentary says tacks wise LR are quicker, and they seem to be better upwind. Moderate 12 kph today, not favouring Team NZ, but maybe a day of good learnings. Its clear that this design is too new to be fully optimised, that's probably the real race, optimisation, as distinct from boat speed and sailing skill
Back of an envelope calc, a measly 1/4 knot extra boat speed is worth 450 metres over 25 minutes. A lot could be gained or lost on optimisation still?
This isn't looking promising.
The Italian boat is far more precise - they can point it better, they sail better angles and the crew don't make mistakes.

Spoke too soon :)
