Outstanding stuff by our blokes to win the WTC, for any team to perform at their best each player has do perform their role really well, our blokes certainly did that, Conway & Jamieson were huge finds for us.
India bowled out for 78. wow.
Ouch ! ...was it a minefield or awful batting ?
Watched the highlights... India can only blame themselves, dreadful batting.
rippa: Conway & Jamieson were huge finds for us.
Definitely. Conway was a given, was just the eligibility, Jamieson has just been quietly tweaking his game for Auck for some time now. Given how good he is with the bat, I think we are yet to see his best even. Im sure his ~13 avg with the ball will go up, and his batting down, but I think he will end up NZ's equivalent of Kallis. Potentially a top 5 all time, all rounder.
Speaking of which, head back a bit from the modern game to Hadlee, first man to 300 wickets at avg 22 and avg ~30, he could well be not just the best bowler of his era, but NZs best all rounder at this stage.
It is this level that I want to see being labelled an "all rounder", above 30 with the bat, below 30 with the ball is the minimum requirement. Otherwise select more batsmen.
The exciting thing is we have SO much talent coming through in the last couple of years. More young bowlers consistently around 150kph+ etc. Batsmen like Conways opening partner for Welli, Finn Allen, who was blocked by Auck's Guppy and Munro so made the move and its paid off (sure his stats arent great yet, but thats largely to do with his getting consistency in a team, lets judge him from Welli onward). The list is a solid 2nd 11 deep imo. I just hope we do not block real talent with "old guard" mentality, which has been Larsons selection approach in the past along with Kane errring on the side of conservative with his selections. But I think that will be changing very soon, with so much talent hot on the heals of the current team.
We have clearly been in the golden years of NZ cricket since about 2014, but I dont think it is close to finishing. Given the duldrums we suffered post Hadlee era, those frustrations, tears and hard graft being a supporter need to be savoured now, but the next chapter could be equally as exciting :-)

Yes it's very sad. He seemed to have rebuilt a happy life in Canberra.
Sometimes people pass way too early, that just seem unimaginable. Chris being such a big and fit bloke just shocked the heck out of me. He is one of our greats and that was in a team not far off rock bottom. :-(
I take you mean T20 for Finn Allen as much like Guptill, Finn Allen does not have a great technique for red ball cricket and being a wogger in T20 isn't going to improve it much.
I would wait a year or 2 for Jameson, See what he does on non green tops and when he has to bat when the opposition bowlers are fresh.

I’ve got tickets to NZ - India, Australia-England and NZ vs qualifier A2.
Phoarrrrrr, Im jealous. I'd love to watch the Aus game live. I hope the limited tonkers we do have picked turn it on for you. A shame Aus didnt pick Phillipe for the squad.
Despite our miserable result vs Ban I am quietly confident, not expecting a final but think we should go ok. The Ban t20 teams were very much testing the bottom end of our 32 man squad, which was to be expected with the IPL. Finn did "ok". Ravindra was sadly a fail. The real star from a NZ perspective was Latham, consistently scoring above 20.
Very odd Latham isn't in the 16 man squad named imo, I know hes an ODI/Test player, but his form vs Ban showed he can play t20.... I think a couple too many all rounders, I'd like to have seen Munro, Allen, Latham in the 16. I understand wanting to play 3 spinners. So despite missing those real tonkers of the ball, I think/hope we can make a really decent team from that 16.
What does everything think our opening first XI will be against Pak in the opening match? Im especially interested in who will open with Guppy?

My money is on Guptill and Conway to open in the T20 World Cup. I don’t think Siefert should be opening the batting.
Yep, based on the 16 man squad Im 100% with you. Conway has shown how lethal he is at opening, playing the feeder role to finn Allen last years SSmash and then he takes over as the tonker. I expect he will play a very similar role with Guppy.
I agree re Seifert. We all know he CAN play, but his form after T20 tours 20/21 rapidly declined. I just hope he finds whatever it was that made him more consistant and goes for that rather than trying to win the game in one over, thats where Glenn Phillips is our best bet.
I expect Santner and Sodhi will both be in the first 11. Fergusson is averaging 10.8 in the IPL with 10 wickets from 5 matches. Well ahead of our next best, Boult. Lockie seems to have rebuilt the minor fracture and the adjoining muscle groups and is delivering consistent heat yet again, I expect much like the 19 WC, he could be the top wicket taker of the t20WC, although there will be a lot of first class spinners vs the English conditions vying for the top spot :-). I hope Sodhi trusts in his regulation spine, which could tear a players leg clean off haha, but he also has great variance in the game. Both he and Lockie were the top white ball wicket takers, I believe during the Aus/NZ summer but of all international teams (so including teams touring).

The NZ Pakistan game in Sharjah was the first game to sell out.
I saw some clickbait news, lost the link, where I think it was one of he Pak coaches saying they will leave "xyz" (forget the word used) to the playing field. So I imagine its going to be quite heated, especially if NZ gets up and wins. Im not sure what NZ really did wrong, with other teams following suit. Its not like the NZ players and us fans werent upset by the withdrawal and credible threat, bad timing with the coaalition pulling out of Afg, it might be a long time before another chance happens again. I hope not.
Either way though, that first match is going to be a ripper.
So are the games not selling out or is it just because the stadium capacity is really big and or local interest in cricket?
Are you working there? We were meant to move back to europe this year so I would have made at least one of the games. At least the game times are not too bad for down under.....

Handle9: The Pakistan situation is complex. I don’t think there will be a problem on the field. Both teams seem to like each other.
I’ve lived in Dubai for 3 years.
I nearly moved there some 30 odd years back with some good knowledge post Telecom work, but went to Telstra instead lol.
What is it really like there now? Back then it sounded cagey and was all compound type living. But ya cant believe everything your told etc.
Yes, I think deep down most Pak fans would have been dissapointed but understood. We treat them with great respect when touring NZ and they do likewise, always signing kids bat etc. They a very different team with Barba.
Well sounds like most game should be a sell out? Not long now.
Ish Sodhi the standout yet again, much like last season with the white ball.
25 runs and 3 wickets in a t20, not bad.
NZ had that game won, still cant believe the slide, forget how many runs but the middle essentially gone for not many. Still, considering the players not in the team, if the middle was bolstered, good to know we competitive with Eng.
Really need to take the pressure off Jamo as his batting is now being impacted, hes a far better batsman than this, in fact he was an opener. Dont want to see him go the way of Southee, even though he has more batting talent than Southee had, southee was a real all rounder at the start of his career.
NZ selections over Munro have come to haunt us imo, Id have Munro and Guptill opening if he was in the squad, if not Finn Allen, one of the two needed to be picked. Showing a real lack of batting ability with preference for very average all rounders. Given both Phillips and Williamson are as good a spinners as Santner, I do not see why the need for Astle to take a slot in the 16 man squad.... just my 2c.
Clearly 8 bowlers is too many all rounders. It will be between Santner and Astle for the big games, not sure which way they will go but based on this non event Id errr on the side of history and go with Santner's accuracy even if somewhat predictable, he can get it in the slot consistently I'd slide Jamieson up to 7 and have the Nesham come in after him. Tough choice between Boult and Lockie, Im going Fergusson who was up there with Sodhi last season before injury and rotate southee and boult
Tough group, Pak and Ind, but I think if we are good enough we should be able to beat one of them with our best team.
