Been watching some archives on F1TV, 1970 to 75 so far. We all complain here about no close racing, well back in the day it was that x 10. One race the second guy was really close to the pole sitter, half a second. They often stretched out like browns cows. Id say the cause was few restrictions, so you would often get poor cars and unreal cars, the rest scattered in the middle. Tyres? Two brands, one was better in the dry one was much better in the wet, my god!

How about Seb's drive in his Williams FW14. What an amazing car! It made me go back and watch some races from the early 90s.

Are you subscribed to F1TV? The archives go back to 1970, a real eye opener

Yes have been using F1TV this season, pretty happy with it. I'll check out more of those archives.

Austria proved to be pretty exciting for a lot of it.  Not sure what was going on there to enable this, but there was close racing and overtaking too.

Track limits annoy me, they should put some gravel on the other side of the kerb not run off so your car looses traction and there is incentive to keep it on the track.

Going over a white line and getting a time penalty is not motor racing.

I agree re gravel. But in most sports if you play the game out of the field you get a penalty, so I can't see the issue. What I do feel however, is that the visibility isnt as good with the larger tyres and the tyre eyebrow. But they do need to stay in the field of play or else its unfair. Stay on the race track/tennis court/rugby field

Batman: Do you get every driver in car cam feed with f1TV.?

Yes the official web and android tv players let you switch between the channels/streams (but there a pause when changing channel/stream), the players themselves don't do multi view atm but you can open up multiple tabs/windows of the web player and have them on different channels at the same time or you can have other channels playing on other devices at the same time. There seems to be a generous limit on how many connections/instances you can run.

There are some unofficial solutions for multi view in one player for display on a single screen but they are in a war of escalation with the DRM applied to the feeds.

The channels/streams are:

- F1 Live: The younger/newer commentators ie: Ben Edwards, Jolyon Palmer, Sam Collins etc, solid/consistent commentary

- F1 International: The older Sky UK commentators ie: Crofty, Brundle etc, having tried both options this year I think they are still the better commentators marginally imo but you seem to get periods where the commentators aren't talking during coverage (especially in practice sessions) where presumably Sky are running some ad or something, you get bonus random chats audio with team principles that live channel commentators don't seem to get as yet which is nice, sometimes they seem to be commentating some extra overlay graphics or picture in picture replay that is Sky UK exclusive that you can't see which is a bit annoying.

note: the actual footage shown the two above streams in F1 TV is identical this year so just different commentary

- Tracker

- Data

- Driver cams

Ive no issue with a video ref

But the rules are vague, so its not rule, they need a marker(s) to set where each apex is, that's not in place. It doesnt matter of the rule is right or not it needs to be enforceable and with no marked apex we will remain with an unclear situation

Guidelines for overtaking on the inside of a corner:
“In order for a car being overtaken to be required to give sufficient room to an overtaking car, the overtaking car needs to have a significant portion of the car alongside the car being overtaken and the overtaking manoeuvre must be done in a safe and controlled manner, while enabling the car to clearly remain within the limits of the track.

When considering what is a ‘significant portion’ for an overtaking on the inside of a corner, among the various factors that will be looked at by the stewards when exercising their discretion, the stewards will consider if the overtaking car’s front tyres are alongside the other car by no later than the apex of the corner.”

Guidelines for overtaking on the outside of a corner:
“In order for a car being overtaken to be required to give sufficient room to an overtaking car, the overtaking car needs to have a significant portion of the car alongside the car being overtaken and the overtaking manoeuvre must be done in a safe and controlled manner, while enabling the car to clearly remain within the limits of the track.

When considering what is a ‘significant portion’, for an overtaking on the outside of a corner, among the various factors that will be looked at by the stewards when exercising their discretion, the stewards will consider if the overtaking car is ahead of the other car from the apex of the corner. The car being overtaken must be capable of making the corner while remaining within the limits of the track.”

What is alongside the other car? Id have to assume if the front of the front wheel is level with the last bit of the other car. Again its vague.

I have issues with rules that are so unclear or unworkable in practise that you're constantly heading to the third umpire for a ruling, especially when that umpire will change from week to week and lack consistency.

Coupled with all of the rules there's always been that overriding physical aspect whereby you don't want to crash regardless so hopefully both drivers give some consideration to that.

Next we'll see time penalties being given in reverse as well, so if you're penalised a drive through or 10s penalty added at end of race, the person you impeded/shoved off the track get's that same time deducted, and we won't know who has one until long after the race has finished etc.

Interesting to see the drivers getting vocal about their dislike of where this is all going at the moment.
