It's safer to try for clean passes (obviously), simply to avoid both the risk of mechanical failure or the risk of the stewards coming down with a random ruling this year. 

 

It's similar to Rugby where someone tries for a try with 10 people crowded around and over them.  They might well have scored it, but with no convincing footage to fall back on it's risky.  Much safer to pass out wide where the try scorer is in free space and there's no room/need for it to be reviewed.

 

A quicker, more transparent ruling process would really go a long way here though.  In this case you would simply order Verstrapon to give the place back, and then we all move on.  That's a much better outcome than a process that takes longer than the whole race and leaves everyone in limbo as to who might have won etc. 

 

Hard here because it happened right at the end, so little time before the podium etc, but a simple place swap order could have been applied straight away.  We need rules that deal with issues like this quickly and consistently, without the racing becoming sterilised by pedantic rulings that hurt the racing aspect.  In this case there wasn't a wall there, Leclerc simply ran wide onto sealed tarmac over the kerb and didn't crash and neither car sustained mechanical damage.  Contentious ruling therefore = give place back and get on with it.  Works for me.

I agree, but if the SAME move was done and there was a wall, or there was a puncture, you can't rule differently. If there was room, Charles wasn't touched, its a fair fight. Similarly if we all feel that Max would have passed eventually that doesn't change anything, that just adds more subjectivity to what is a fortnightly joke

In this case they bumped wheels, that's it.  Bottom line with the stewards seems to be that no one driver was fully at fault, so it becomes a racing incident.  Max closed the door aggressively, but at least he'd braked in time and was controlled as he exited the corner, not sliding in to take someone else out in a cloud of white rubber smoke.

 

Leclerc could have positioned himself better to defend, and his car placement left the door open for Verstrap to be (just) ahead with the inside line as they started to exit the corner.  Leclerc could have braked and pulled out of the wedge that was closing, but didn't and was hit.  Verstrap could have hugged the inside of the corner, which would have meant less speed but would have given enough room to avoid a crash with both cars within the track limits.

Of the two I think Verstrap would have had the worst case, if this had been deemed more than a racing incident.  For the sake of the sport I think it's better to encourage passing rather than not, and the consequences weren't significant enough to cause any significant damage, both went on to finish the race.  Leclerc would have braked out of the situation, or they both would have crashed if it had been a wall, but it wasn't.

I don't think the extent of damage should really matter. Cars get penalties for leaving the track to gain an advantage, so forcing someone to leave the track to gain an advantage when they are fully alongside is questionable.

Bumped wheels in this case means loss of momentum. Whats the grip like on the black stuff or the kerbs?

 

Max wasn't controlled, as he said. The "crest" causes understeer so it was "not his fault" this known understeer ran him into Charles.

 

VES wasn't "just ahead, re watch the replay, The tyres were even. Yes, LeC left the door open, that does not mean you win. LeC had no need to pull out of the wedge as he was right in it. As the wedge closed he might be behind, or in front, as it happened it was even. VES could have taken the inside line but hey didn't.? Why not? As he took the outside line and that allowed them to be even, if he took the inside line, he loses the corner. 

 

We all want passing, but defending is just as important. Do we want the best or do we want the passer who gets a free pass?

Feels a bit like Alonso trying to motivate the McLaren team, but the car’s just not there against the merc.

Reminds me of the Australian rugby team talking themselves up during the week, so much that they genuinely start believing what they’re saying. Then comes game day vs the All Blacks and they honestly seem surprised by what was an inevitable outcome all along.

Being the best driver in the world really comes down to being both skilled AND somehow ensuring you are behind the wheel of the best car on the grid too.

Unless its hours of Safety car laps as most wet races seam to be now days.

 

 

 

Yeh, I was just joking about last years race. I must admit I don't think Vettel is as good as I used to think he was. Lewis has a better car but I also think he is a better driver. Though I'm not a Hamilton fan, credit where credit is due. The last few seasons we have seen Vettel succumb to the pressure and make mistakes.

 

Max always seams happy in the wet and should give Red Bull an even better chance if the race is wet.
