The cartoonist seems to have made her lips and mouth very large, which is getting very close to depictions used in deliberately racist cartoons in the past. The tantrum aspects were very well done and bang on.

The problem is, those old fashioned cartoons were racist because they would be in a context of portraying black people as inferior. The visual caricature itself is not doing that, it's just a caricature.

I think Navratilova has summed up my sentiment on this topic better than I could myself. I have no doubt that there are double standards in the sport of tennis, as there are in many other sports, and life in general. However that doesn't excuse Williams for how she reacted. The two issues need to be separated and addressed for what they are. William's behaviour has already been addressed through the penalties applied during the match and the subsequent fine. Now its up to the WTA to address the issue of double standards.

Our own Belinda Cordwell has said similar.

No matter that Williams has some valid points. Her vilification of the poor umpire was despicable. Her minimisation of her own failure is despicable. Her destruction of what should have been her opponent's greatest day was despicable.

The faux teary outrage and wailing about her daughter etc all just so transparently trying to avoid dealing with the fact she just got beat fair and square. She's full of herself and not dealing with it. Her comment that the umpire would never again officiate on "her" court said it all.

Racisim and sexism have a lot to do with the unfair application of power by the strong and privileged over the weak and unprivileged. In this case, who is strong and privileged? Not the the anonymous umpire getting paid $600 a day who's not even allowed to make a public statement to support himself.

A key phrase in that article is

"MARTINA Navratilova has broken ranks from the female tennis world"

So, that tells me that there is discrimination as the female tennis world is far more likely to side with Serena than a 50/50 mix. Two wrongs don't make a right

Congrats to MN

1. Serena is wrong

2. Ramos is right

3. Work to do in tennis for issues that do exist, but not here

They do have equal pay now. I reckon keep it simple, WTA supplies the umpires for women's matches.

They do have equal pay now. I reckon keep it simple, WTA supplies the umpires for women's matches.

And as un-PC as it is to say it, women's tennis is miles behind men's in just about every way. There's one player domination and the rest are relatively no-names whereas the men's tennis has 4 legends at once Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray plus a few other great players. Women's tennis has to be watched with the volume down due to the screeching. Many of the women serve like they are playing patter tennis. They don't/can't play 5 set matches etc etc.

Women's tennis may have equal pay but I guarantee you they don't bring in the money that men's tennis does.

I just did a search and it appears to be said in the context of umpiring. I'd like to know some basic statistics then we shall all know for sure one way or another. Anyway, considering the opponent is also a female, how is sexism even possible!

My point was ... the WTA have been complaining about sexism in tennis for years. Why don't they do their own thing?

Surely female tennis players would be better off under such self-determination.

They could be Mistresses of their own destiny, responsible for their own revenue streams, have everything their own way.
