Maybe they could red line fairways in tour events? max hitting distance is 320 yards, if over that bring it back. Seems an easy fix with no loopholes or messing with courses

I'm not sure what you mean? Make everything outside the fairway a penalty area?

Sorry if I was unclear. Put a limit on drive distance. Red line across fairway and rough, you cant hit further, if you do, no penalty just that the ball is brought back to the red lone, a type of drop zone if you like. Long drives will thus end, no course remodeling required

The amount of skill required to turn a decent, powerful hit into a decent, powerful AND accurate hit is enormous.

Signed, someone who has plenty of the former and none of the latter.

The issue with this is you have to have that area defined. It would essentially be adding internal out of bounds to each hole. You couldn't have it as a penalty area as you are allowed to play from those.
It would mean someone who say hit it 250 into the trees and wished to chip it out and up the fairway would have to avoid it again by keeping the shot short of it. And if you hit one 310 and then messed up your second and didn't get it over you're penalised as well.

No, no penalty areas, its just a limitation on the drive. Say a shot went 350 yards straight, back it goes to the "limit" If it was 350 into the trees or rough, back it goes to the red line boundary. If you had to go back to the "limit" and you were in the rough or first cut, you go back to the red line, in the rough or first cut.

You can't alter a course to counter these few long hitters, they will still hit it long. If you regulated tour clubs or balls they will still hit it longer than the average tour pro, so no benefit. The only penalty is length, as apparently hitting it too far is not fair, so we place a limit on length.

Chipping out from the trees, no issue, chip where you like as your drive is limited not any other shot. Its ONLY about the tee off drive. This means that no one ever drives longer than the red line. DJ plays his second next to Rickie Fowler. That what the authorities seem to want.

I applaud the sentiment but in reality it would be impossible. Every hole would have to have the red line extending to the course boundary, so someone didn't slug one 350 down the neighbouring hole. How it would effect someone who it hit it one inch off the tee? And then hit it past the red line?

The new rules have tidied up a lot of stuff. Of course you can mitigate long hitters, but maybe not with rough. Pot bunkers etc, professionals are masters out of the sand, but not when they're 100m away and have to play sideways. Plenty of British courses have bunkers you absolutely want to avoid. If players are now flying over them, dig some more.

Couple of nice loopholes there! The fairways and rough would be red lined, and an imaginary one should they venture sideways. One inch off the tee, that leaves second shot off the deck with a driver, so fill your boots, red line is out of play. My take was length.not obstacles. Maybe obstacles targeting long hitters would work, but expertly played shots out of the rough (avoided bunkers) is what they are doing now.

Watched the last 12 just now, only saw the last two or three. Couple of holes, both on the fairway they were literally a metre apart, Woolf a tad longer. the other also very close, Woolf 2  metres longer. Woolf certainly caved in under pressure, while DeC was stable and reliable. Woolf will be huge soon.

I think the latest bombers issue won't amount to anything, this isn't the first time. Stats show we have a good few bombers, and have had for a while. IMHO its the same in many other sports, as long as there is no mechanical assistance or drug assistance, it's fine.
