So, there you have it from CSR Glen FWIW.  It seems we will have the option to go the Sky NZ route or the direct route for 2023.

Thats good, although none here knows who chose and who accepted. F1TV Pro appears to be owned by F1, so if they allow that as well as Sky then Sky doesnt have exclusive rights so the cost will be far less than before. But, its interesting that Spark gave F1TV Pro free to us. Did they pay more for that , I'd assume so. Spark Sport wise they never got critical mass, so they were never going to go after 2023. Whether Sky had a choice of exclusive or not, no one here knows. My guess is that to reduce rights costs they chose the lower cost option.

I think you can get a NBA pass and also watch NBA on sky, so maybe a similar model to that?

May have to try and get F1TV pro though nordvpn then, should be able to purchase a US subscription using a  wise card.

If you havent heard of these cards, they are great. I used one to get  a paramount+ trial from amazon. This requires a US credit card and the

wise card worked as a US card.  Unless paramount have turned off credit card location requirement, which I doubt, as it was active last trial

I did a couple of years ago.

@thermonuclear, Cricket and F1 are my favourite sports also, so you arent alone!

Cheers,

Mike

Will be holding Glen personally responsible if that doesn't end up working. 😉

You don't need a VPN nor an overseas card. Just go here and sign up as usual from NZ https://www.formula1.com/en/subscribe-to-f1-tv.html#en-NZ

you might want to read the whole thread, we were discussing if SKY would negotiate with F1TV to block their service to NZ.

Indeed.  That's the $99.99 question isn't it?  No doubt at all that Sky NZ would want to block F1TV as a potential competitor for Kiwi subscribers interested in watching F1.  You'd like to think Glen was across the subject as one of their representatives, and had been briefed by his manager to expect questions about this.  He was certainly aware of the shift from Spark to Sky.

But, he is also just a foot-soldier for the organisation so I'll wait to see what happens when we get closer to the 2023 season kicking off.  One thing he did say is that it would not matter to F1TV if you had previously had an account with them, either through Spark or as a stand-alone subscriber.

I wanted to know if my being registered with them currently meant that I would be entitled to continue with them into the 2023 season, whereas a new Kiwi rocking up to them in 2023 would be denied a subscription to F1TV because of the new agreement they had with Sky NZ.  He said that, no, anyone from NZ would be able to sign up with them in 2023, regardless of whether they had previously been with them in 2021/22 or not.

He didn't give the impression that he wasn't on top of the subject, or any statements to the effect "hang on, I'd better go check that with my boss."  So, we will see.  Live Chat is available daily I think if you want to see for yourself.  Just bear in mind they don't come online until midnight our time.

The question on the f1 tv pro will be what's in it for f1. If they have enough subscribers here to offset the difference in what sky would be paying they'll keep it going and not let sky have the exclusivity, but if numbers are low it's probably better for them to just let sky pay then the cash and not deal with is anymore.

I really hope we get to keep it, it's the only sport I actually watch and $100 a year is reasonable for 23 races, $400 for the same through sky is not so reasonable. Fine if you want all the other sports they have but just far too much for a race a fortnight.

Why would F1TVPro care how how many subscribers it had in NZ? they wouldn't have any local NZ costs would they? who is caching their content and where does it come from? maybe that s also part of the deal sky take over the CDN for F1TVPRO and F1 give them a reduced price.

Purely financially they would care. If they have 1000 subs and stand to take a net of $1 million but sky offer them an extra 1.5 million to make it exclusive they'd take the $1.5 million. Any business would do the numbers and whatever makes them more money run with that option. Their profit is difectly linked to subs.

Received the following email from F1TV this morning ...

Hi thermonuclear,

We wanted to let you know that we’re making some changes to the way F1 TV Pro will be made available in New Zealand.

The changes and what they mean to you

The way we broadcast F1 in New Zealand is changing and it will no longer be shown on Spark from 2023. Because of these changes, we wanted you to know that your current F1 TV Pro subscription – which you currently receive as part of your Spark Sport package – will no longer be available from 31 December 2022.

Your F1 account details

Whilst your F1 account log in details will no longer let you watch F1 TV, those details will continue to work across the F1.com and F1 Fantasy websites.

If you have an F1 TV subscription that you’ve bought directly from F1 or through your App Store, this will not be impacted by the changes.

Thanks,

The team at F1

Yep me to, interesting that perhaps Sky haven't locked out all the rights or that F1 wasn't allowing them to... still I've got SSN for the EPL and F1 but this is a good deal for those that just want F1... The in car views are really good to watch, I used to watch the race live on the TV via Spark and then in car on a tablet beside me..

Yeah, no mention of F1TV in the lengthy joint press release from Sky NZ and F1.  You'd think they would have mentioned it somewhere in the release if Sky were going to do a similar thing with it as Spark have been doing.

Either F1 didn't offer it to Sky or Sky didn't want it.  It must be an interesting job to be involved in sports rights negotiation.  I wouldn't have minded listening in to see what each side had to say on this one.

I'd also like to know how Sky UK fits into the puzzle exactly.  Apparently they do have full exclusivity to the F1 rights in Britain, but they obviously provide their presenting package to other nations as well.  Even F1TV has the Sky UK presenters as an option, and it is the Sky team you hear if you watch replays after.

I read recently that Channel 4 over there have their own coverage for 2023, not live races, but almost everything else.  That must be with Sky UK's agreement and/or involvement.   So that Sky UK relationship with F1 seems to be much more than a "simple" rights-owner/rights-holder one.

The UK one has been that way since sky secured the rights a few years back off of the BBC, it used to be that free tv had some races like the British gp and a couple of others and the rest were all extended highlights on Sunday evening. It makes sense to offer that free to help build the fanbase and accommodate those that can't afford sky. Free tv always used to send their own crews around the world with the circus and offer their own package of content with the races.

A big difference between sky NZ and sky UK is what's offered, the UK version has a full dedicated sky F1 channel running 24/7 and I believe you can subscribe to just the F1 if you want to, not sure if their F1 channel also includes on demand back catalogue like F1 tv does. I think there's just a lot more overlap between their F1 coverage and what we are offered that offering F1 tv pro doesn't add much value you can't get through the sky options there.

Interesting how f1tv say in the thermonuclear's post above

"If you have an F1 TV subscription that you’ve bought directly from F1 or through your App Store, this will not be impacted by the changes."

Hopefully that doesnt mean you can keep F1TV if you already have it, but not subscribe a new one next year.

I found a reddit post that says if you sub to F1tv then your year starts from that exact day. Wonder if its worth subscribing for a year now, or before 31 Dec, in case they change the rules 1 Jan?

Cheers,

Mike
