Anyone else been to the Aus F1? I really love that section from Apex 3 to 10.

Vettel er mannen, supermannen f1 :-).

I do miss the indycars at Surfers, not polished like f1 but something fun and raw about that street circuit.

Not me, have a mate there, kept meaning to go. Been to a Nascar race at Atlanta though. I went off Indycars, many street tracks are narrow, then on super speedways there wasnt many cars so they spread out like Browns Cows

Oh Albert park is pretty. You will love it. I took every oppurtunity in the time i spent living in Melbourne, truely an amazing sport city, sport obsessed.

Nascar is very very technical, its all about the turns and traction. I used to race Nascar on PC, same thing, its actually very scientific. My guy Mark Martin, No.6 car ran third the day I went. JJ, 48 won

Was a great race. Clearly Seb gained through the VSC, the VSC is a very very dumb idea. Markelov won in Monaco like this, he was well out of play, VSC came out and he was in front and won

Again Mercedes is the fastest car in clear air, and when they get pole they should win, unless luck comes into play. Again, when not leading they are just another top car, nothing special. Given the grid at the pointy end has closed up, they now HAVE to get pole and HAVE to lead all the way.

Ferrari look great. Kimi liked his car, Seb isnt that happy, but they can still hang with Mercs if Mercs are in front. And they can hold Mercs behind

RBR look really good. Max would have been in the mix but for his mistake.

McLaren are back. While Danny Ricc was close behind he never looked like making a banzai pass. Vandorne was only 7 or so seconds behind Alonso as I counted a few laps from the finish

Haas look ominous in the race behind the top three teams.

VSC needs to be looked at. You get the VSC flag, you slow down so the race is neutralised, but its not. You are on a slow bend at 80k, you slow down, I am at 325k, I slow down, but I wont be slowing down too quickly..... I gain a lot of distance. When the push the VSC button, they need to lock in the time difference a car is behind the one in front, that driver needs to maintain that then run a VSC speed. If the car in front pits, you stay at the time difference that you were behind what is now the car in front when VSC came on. That will neutralise the race. If the pit entry and exit is shorter or longer than the track, have a VSC speed that you must maintain on pit entry and exit so you dont get a shortcut advantage or a longer distance disadvantge

Would there have been a different result (Seb putting and coming out ahead of LH who has already pitted and doesn't need to pit again) were there a full safety car? LH would be going much slower under full SC who will be instructed to pick out SV as race leader.

SV was about 10 seconds behind from memory, so LH had track position for standard pitstops. Say that SV did come out ahead, then you are correct, no difference, be keen to see a data comparison. But with a SC isnt the car order defined at that point? I recall one race where the driver was in the pits and was deemed ahead on track as the pitstop was ahead

But VSC is totally unfair. If every car was travelling at 154k at the time of the VSC, then its fair, but that's not possible. The Markelov example was astounding and stupid. He was at high speed when many cars were on slow bends, so he was making up metres hand over fist while he was slowing down.

Been to Albert park twice, back when F1 cars sounded good.

Very cool atmosphere, and back then we got a ticket that you swapped to a different stand each day with. Was pretty cool.
Did general admission too, but either way you need a screen as you can’t see the whole track.

What are you talking about? At time of VSC, SV was 16s [the colourful data screen showed 16s but apparently it was actually 12s] AHEAD of LH, in positions 1, and 2 respectively. SV was the race leader.

You need to read before jumping. How does At time of VSC relate to SV was about 10 seconds behind from memory (correct), so LH had track position for standard pitstops. (also correct)

Ok my apologies let's move on. I probably had a bad day yesterday.

The commentators were saying if it were a full safety cars Lewis might have stayed in front. Not sure how that works as he'd be going even slower while Vettel got his new tyres.

Anyway, timing of safety cars are all about luck. Vettel said he was praying for a safety car and he got it. Toto Wolff had no issues with it and called it motor racing, noting that LH benefited from a few safety cars last year too.

Luck, yes. Toto said they had a glitch in the algorithm so it was 3 seconds off. But I have no idea how you can run an algorithm as its luck. Safety car comes out, you are in the Monaco hairpin just before the tunnel, running at fast jogging speed, literally. I am zooming down the pit straight. You stick to the SC speed, or the VSC speed while I take my time slowing down......, making up distance hand over fist. The VSC is about keeping the gap the same, neutralising the race. Seconds are always constant, so it "shouldnt" matter, but in my example, I am closing the metres fast, so when I get to your VSC speed (taking my own sweet time) , Ive got a handy freebie of probably two or three hundred of metres, which now, at SC or VSC speed is many seconds. So yes I agree it is luck. Unless the algorithm was calculating the seconds gap continually and allowing for the other cars being at a much faster pace, I cant see how he can say it was a glitch. When you are at low speed you are exposed. Re SV pitstop, that places him at another part of the track, where he may be running faster

IIRC, in Nascar when I used to follow that, the pits were not open when a SC was called, it opened after. So the field stabilises, then the pits open. When that happens SV is in front, but needs a pitstop, he will save time as LH is running at SC speed but he gives up his track position, plus he has also lost his 14 second lead (due to LH last pitstop) as the field has compacted. Pit before a SC, life is great. Or everyone is on a similar strategy. I am leading, good on me. I pass the pit entry then everyone else dives into the pits. I am still leading, everyone else is on new tyres, GRRR

But F1 needs to decide if luck is cool, or its not. If this race was the final race and SV and LH has been neck and neck through the whole season, then the title is all due to Haas. Or Piquet intentionally crashing his car to bring out a SC, as he did.

True

And many titles are won by the car, not the driver. Best car = win. The Drivers Championship is not really that. If you are ranked No.1 in tennis and most sports, its because you and the standard equipment you use, (racket, ball, soccer ball, golf club, etc) you were the best. F1 is not like that. If they ran the same car it would be.

Good page. The unlimited engines was a good suggestion though, or at least many. 1000bhp, and you have to nurse engine wear and save fuel. I think the rpm limit is about 16000, maybe more but they run about 11500 for engine saving reasons.

Their full mode is only used for quali and a desperate need rare push to pass, thats the pinnacle of motorsport?
