So ... what is to stop them setting up their own separate operation? Separate events, tours, sponsorship etc. Make their own tournament rules and pay female stars as much as the male stars are paid.

They do have equal pay now. I reckon keep it simple, WTA supplies the umpires for women's matches.

And as un-PC as it is to say it, women's tennis is miles behind men's in just about every way. There's one player domination and the rest are relatively no-names whereas the men's tennis has 4 legends at once Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray plus a few other great players. Women's tennis has to be watched with the volume down due to the screeching. Many of the women serve like they are playing patter tennis. They don't/can't play 5 set matches etc etc.

Women's tennis may have equal pay but I guarantee you they don't bring in the money that men's tennis does.

Right on all counts, and equal pay was due to an equality issue, so there you go. Lets make it equal, but what suits. This whole issue Serena started was over inequality. Deserves a Tui poster perhaps.

Surely female tennis players would be better off under such self-determination.

They could be Mistresses of their own destiny, responsible for their own revenue streams, have everything their own way.

They simply can't afford to go their own way. As was said earlier by, they have equal pay despite bringing in a fraction of the sponsor and punter revenue that the men's game generates. Without doubling billing with the men's game the attendance at matches and broadcasting income will not sustain the game.

I can't get my head around people not understanding the difference between taking exception to her *behaviour* and the fact there may have been somewhat valid reasons behind the tantrum in the first place.

The bottom line is, the issues she was upset over, aren't resolved by the match day referee the day of the final. If she wants to protest in hope of changing equality, then it's done off court I believe.

I believe her words and behaviour were indefensible.

I love my wife, and my kids, but if they behaved this way, or if I did, I would expect a show of support for the person, but not of the behaviour.

Momentum is a very powerful thing in sport. I am not sure I agree it was an attempt to adjust the momentum personally, I think she let her emotions get over the top of her.

She has not issued a statement of apology for her behaviour to my knowledge, in my view this dimishes her character in my eyes.

Cracked under pressure. That's part of sport. Sport isnt just passing the ball, hitting the ball, its managing the bad times, getting through it, not caving in. Play your game as best you can, the stats will look after themselves. (Apart from the conclusion where another tactic or desperate act might have to be used)

She lacks credibility on any issue she attempts to relate back to her behaviour, because it looks like retrospective justification of her appalling conduct.

There is now some talk of an umpire boycott of SW matches.

At this point anyone ruled by logic rather than emotion would stop digging apologise and move on. She would be better to let go and focus energy on regaining her form.

With her record, and her position, what annoys me the most, is that a loss would barely have registered on her record. She had the capacity to lose gracefully and set an example to others. She was a brat here in Auckland last year, complaining about the weather, she referenced it on and on in Australia too.

I doubt she will be back to Auckland, and I am not sorry to say, good riddance. There are plenty of talented and fun to watch tennis players (albeit without her celebrity status) who can play a good match and entertain a crowd.

To be fair, I am not a Tennis fan per se. I watch the occassional final and know who the top 2-3 players in each gender are. I have untold admiration for the achievements of the top players, longevity, of most sports. I consider Richie McCaw one of the greatest all time sports people ever, because with very few exceptions he was not only a great player, but an exceptional role model.

Whatever she thought she was fighting for, got lost in the simple fact that it doesn't matter which sport, the respect for the officials should be maintained.

Try that carry on in Rugby and you'll be on the sidelines. I wonder if she would have lost if she let the first fine go to fight it after the game.

We will never know, but Osaka was beating her in every aspect. She HAD to win the second set. If this happened in the first set, with scores on serve, it probably would not have escalated, but she was up against the wall and she cracked, IMHO

That sounds vaguely familiar, I thought I recall that the Williams sister have a history of doing unethical things to swing the course of matches

Big difference between calming down enough to whisper a bit of encouragement in your opponents ear, and admitting you behaved like a brat and that you are sorry and will work on ensuring it never happens again, to the world. Which is what, in my eyes, needs to happen.
