Dingbatt:

Handle9: Kirifis one was touch and go but it did look like his weight was on his right hand.

Savea was a clear yellow. He wasn't supporting his weight - he lost his feet and wasn't taking the weight of the maul which collapsed it. He can't get off his feet in that situation.

As a neutral observer I respectfully disagree.

Kirifi had already dislodged the ball with his right hand and then flicked it back with his left, so surely the ruck is over? The Blues player could have just as easily been penalised for wrapping his arms around the ball rather than placing it, thereby preventing Kirifi from getting the ball.

Savea didn’t collapse the maul, he was pulled down by a Blues player, in fact he landed on him. He had his hands on the ball while still supporting his body weight.

I think the assistant referee was wrong on both counts. I’ve wiped the recording now, but did the officials refer the penalty try and second yellow to the TMO?

No referral whatsover. To me that decision (Savea) changed the whole game.

The Kirifi one was marginal so either interpretation could be made

Watch a replay of the Savea one and watch what happens to his feet. As the Hurricanes maul disintegrated his feet go forward of his shoulders - there is no way to support his weight. He basically lands on his backside.

There was likely going to be a yellow to either Savea or Lomax but I agree it should have been referred.

Yes the irony is, without the Kirifi penalty there wouldn’t have been the rolling maul by the goal line. C’est la vie.

This is probably the worst I've ever seen our refereeing going back many many years. It's really very poor right now. There have been mistakes made in Australia in their version of Super Rugby, but not many absolute howlers. Overall Australia's referees are quite a bit better than we are right now.

Right now I couldn't name a single referee in NZ I'd want refereeing a test match, same wasn't true a couple of years ago.

Yip. It was touch and go. You can see here why they ruled the way they did. His elbow was on the ground so he's not supporting his own weight. He never lifts his right hand off the ground and then plays the ball.

The reason for the Savea decision can be seen here. He's gotten himself in a position over the ball carrier pushing him down

He then loses his footing and drags the ball carrier down.

At that point it's pretty clear who has taken it down. He has to stay square so he's clearly not dragging it down. It's a tough position to be in but thems the breaks.

Heros to Zeros in a week. Such is sport.

Both Chiefs tries should not have been allowed. Ball clearly moves toward the try line after being dropped, and is then recollected.

Forward pass by DM in the lead up to the second.

Both kickers had a night to forget from the tee, though DM's will probably be remembered for the one that mattered the most.

How come the "away" strip rules don't apply to the Crusaders?

All the other teams have to wear their (usually crappy) "away" strips when they're not playing at home, regardless of whether thier "home" strip clashes with the home team.

But not the Crusaders!

Today, against the Hurricanes at the Cake Tin, they were in their familiar red-and-black again, just like they were against the Blues.

That was a tense game! It wasn't the backlash performance I had been expecting. I wonder if Laumape will be further sanctioned for his forearm to the throat of Barrett?

Both those passes that led to Crusaders tries looked fairly wonky to me, I wouldn't have been surprised if both had been disallowed.

The Hurricanes could be rightly proud of that performance on the whole. With a totally Rookie 9 and 10, they managed to put the Crusaders (who's discipline is still awful!) under pressure the whole game.

Not missing TJP's incessessant yapping one little bit.

Crusaders have a couple of issues. Loose forward trio makeup isn't quite right. The new number 7 misses too many tackles and doesn't fit in as a real number 7.

Same issue at 12. Good player but not his true position.

Plus handling has been bad.

It's mid season and the games don't mean all that much for them.

I can't find any reason to get enthused about Super Rugby Aotearoa. Many of the games haven't been of a particularly high standard and it just seems like groundhog day.

The whole "away strip" is just adidas and NZ rugby trying to sell more jerseys. I HATE IT

Maybe Blues v Highlanders have a clash but all over teams should play in their normal strips EVERY week

I am the same as you. It used to be that if there was no colour similarity, teams played in their usual colours. The away colours are awful anyway.

Got to say also that Cullen Grace looks off the pace so far this season. Got to think he was picked too early for All Blacks and getting 10 minutes last year when he could have been playing week in week out in the NPC has put his game back.
