As an Audi owner, I'm likely to swing in behind them once they enter F1, especially if Seb's involved.  I'll be a little surprised if he is though, I get the distinct impression he really wants to get fully into saving the planet and, while they are trying to make F1 more eco-friendly and sustainable, it's never going to be a green-friendly activity.

 

Still, put enough money in front of him and who would know.

 

Anybody got an idea if end of season testing will be broadcast anywhere?  Would really like to have a look at those sessions, see how Liam gets on, etc.  I'm sure there would be many potential interested viewers, surely F1/Pirelli could monetize the event and make some extra cash.

lol first they want to save the planet, but when the money is with setting the planet on fire they take the money.

 

you see if you have money, everyone else can burn and wash your car and you will still have air cond in your palace.

F1 2023 will start in earnest with launch season - usually at the beginning of February - before pre-season testing takes place in Bahrain on February 23-25.

 

The campaign then officially begins the following weekend with the Bahrain Grand Prix at the same Sakhir track on March 5.

 

 

 

2023 Cars, a reset of sorts.

Is there anywhere to watch a highlights package of the post season test? Don't see anything on the F1TV app. 

 

Are those lap times actually meaningful, or is it a real mixed bag depending on what the teams are testing? 

 

On the face of it, Hulk's time would seem to be very disappointing and Lawson/Fittipaldi/Shwartzman/Alonso/Drugovich seem to have done very well.

AFAIK its the 2022 cars, and tyre testing, and some young drivers need to have runs. Not a lot to see I think

Yep none of the new 23 cars will have got the clearance from the FIA yet to run and they will still be in active development.  Bahrain season tests will be the first time we see them.

My understand is this; both team cars are run.  One car has an existing team driver and runs the new Pirelli tyre compounds.  The other car is given over to a "young/junior/new" driver and they can run the existing Pirelli tyre compounds or the new compounds.

 

I'm not sure if there are any stipulations placed on the teams around what they are allowed to run on their cars in terms of development parts or new/old/clapped out engines.  You'd expect the senior drivers to be professional and put the hammer down when required, but you also wonder if some of them are already in holiday mode and just mailing it in.

 

But obvious takeaway is that the Ferrari was quick, no matter who was driving.  Gasly was decent in the Alpine but Ocon wasn't there to get a true comparison.  Sargeant was able to keep it pretty tight with Albon.  And Lawson was able to get some great laps in, improved his lunchtime ranking, and kept it within 4/10ths of the World Champion in a similar car.  I think he's acquitted himself well again.

"The writings on the wall, FIA should do something to get more of these drivers into F1 somehow. Almost all the F2 drivers WITHOUT SEATS are on the pace of their team leaders. Now I know the "duhh... it's only testing" argument will come out in force, but - to do the laptime, you have to have the skill to do the laptime. When Alfonso Celis and Sean Gelael used to participate in testing, they were ALWAYS comfortably 3-4 seconds off the regular drivers. Like Liam Lawson. I know he's 4-tenths off but, it's Max Verstappen for crying out loud, Sergio Perez gets paid millions to be half a second behind at 23 different race tracks. Also Felipe Drugovich, two tenths off Fernando Alonso. These two young men will probably never have an F1 seat but they both clearly have the talent to become F1 drivers."

Not enough seats, not enough backmarkers, too many teams changing hands and no new ones being set up. 

 

The days of an Alonso or Webber doing an apprenticeship at Minardi are long gone, sadly. 

 

You start to wonder whether the FIA should be running some wildcard entries in hotted-up F2 cars just to flesh out the grids a bit more. Just give them enough poke to make it past the 107% mark and then let six or so F2 drivers on the grid each race.

 

E: Alternatively, bring in three car teams. Lewis, George, Mick vs. Max, Sergio, Liam?

F1 has become a closed shop unfortunately.  It's hard to understand where the road block truely exists, whether it's Liberty Media, or the FIA, or the existing teams.  Probably all three.  There's plenty of money to be made in F1, it's never been more popular, all the existing stakeholders must be raking it in despite the claims of poverty in some quarters.

 

Teams changing hands instead of starting new ones is a real problem but it's the only way you can get into the sport at the moment.  VAG surely has the muscle and expertise to start a team from scratch rather than buy into existing ones.  Maybe Honda and Andretti too.  The sport needs more teams, more cars, more PU manufacturers.

 

Happy to see 13 teams on the grid, not sure the infrastructure is there to support that with most tracks set up for 20 garages these days.  Probably will add a big chunk of expense to transport a third more teams around the planet also, but it's not insurmountable.

Agree. Sergio is great but as a driver he is not that great. Same car as Max, he should be behind Max every race (bar issues/incidents) but he's not. Max has driven away this title on not the car woth the most horsepower, but the overall package. Sergio can't make No.2 in the title (unless he has help) Harsh, but true

Motorsport is big, but the F1 grid is small. Many times we see great guys but no seats, and ok guys with paid seats. A 3 car team where the third guy HAS to be new is a great idea. RBR, Mercedes, Ferrari, no issue as they can pay. Of course you need to increase the cap. But lesser teams, they maybe cannot muster up enough $ to field a third team. Being creative, the sport as a whole could bridge that gap. The top x teams subsidise the lesser teams fir that third driver. We would the have  a LOOOONG grid, but then again, if the "new" drivers trended at the back they can compete with each other. Some will rise to the top. The lesser will go.

 

10 teams in F1, = 20 drivers, could be 10 teams, 30 drivers? Seems ok to me
