kingdragonfly: I don't mind All-Black rugby, but the news coverage is ridiculous.

I watch TV 1 mid-day news, because its short, and sports are usually not a major portion of the coverage.

However every time the All Blacks do anything, it's becomes the lead new item.

Today's All Black announcement was literally 18 minutes.

News coverage, including life threatening measles, was 6 minutes.

So the All Blacks are 3X more important than all other news combined.

Tonight both TV1 and Three started their so-called 'news' programmes at six p.m. with the All Black selection. Again, this is valid sports news but it is not headline national news. I only watch the news for NZ content but I was so disgusted with this perversion of priorities that I turned to PBS instead, which at least has real news about things that actually matter. Television in this country is dying a slow, painful death as it succumbs to terminal parochialism, an ageing audience, and a deluge of cheap foreign reality cooking competitions and celebrities no-one has ever heard of pretending to be challenged by life on a tropical island. This kind of useless dumbed-down content is painful to behold. Thank goodness there are oversea alternatives where people still care about their brain function.

I've never had any interest in rugby. I'm not a fan of team sports either.

If you actually read what I wrote, you will see that I was not in any way disparaging rugby or any other sport. Of course this has a valid place in society. What I was railing against is the moronic media decision to put rugby at the top of the news, ahead of things that actually matter.

I mean this insufferable crapola is why people roll their eyes when someone feels the urge to prattle on about how they don't like rugby or how it "doesn't matter" or whatever.

I don't particularly enjoy ballet or theatre or other performing arts; does the fact I personally not enjoy them mean they have no cultural value? Of course not. Would I be an idiot to project my own personal interests as a barometer of cultural relevancy? Absolutely.

Just let people enjoy things.

You seem to have a lot of difficulty with reading comprehension. Yet again, I have no problem at all with rugby or those who enjoy it. My criticism is purely of NZ media and the way they prioritise what is supposed to be the main evening news.

If the All Blacks won the world series, that would be a genuine news event that fully deserves top billing on our national news. If an individual All Black farts or sneezes, or gets dropped from the team, that belongs in the sports news. The news should be for the news, not for sports trivialities. Our media have their priorities skewed and that is my complaint. It is the only one.

Well, this is really a matter of opinion. For a LOT of Kiwi's, this IS the biggest thing that happened today (or put another way, the thing they want to hear more about today). Today happens once every 4 years. Measles has been covered *plenty* already in the past few months, there is really only so much more than can be said that hasn't already been said. Just as true for many other topics. Reporters jobs are to report what is important to the public on any given day, and this fits the bill. Today.

Yea frankly I can't understand where I get this from, either.

Maybe too many years of following sports done something to my brain function.

I played first 15 and club rugby but I had to choose between League and Union, I much preferred the one on 3 physicality of league and those moments you could break tackles or run a hole and create open field play.

This was when Union had just started to go Pro and the rules of the game changed ie lifting in line outs was allowed. I havn't had much interest outside international Union since.

I dont find union more strategical, it just has a lot of waffle. I suppose line outs are a good thing. Scrums to me just create that inch by inch mentality thats really not entertaining.

Regardless both sports are so similar with line breaks and overlaps created by draw and pass. I really love watching the AB's put the ball through the back line hands.

I also enjoy watching the Aussies trying to win the Bledisloe, especially at Eden Park, its so much fun watching them get their hopes up and getting white washed blitz 40-0.

I have to say Im flappn excited about this World Cup especially. Because its in Japan, I watch programmes on Netflix like Terrace House and a Japan youtube channel and I have a feel for the place and it will be my next destination.

Im looking forward to seeing the boys on off days visiting the big tuna markets and live seafood and the Wagyu beef farms. I bet they get a fair bit of food gifted and it will be BBQs in their hotel rooms. :-)

Was dissapointed for Owen, but I can understand what Hansen wants. The same thing I want in our Warriors Rugby League team. Fast, mobile, rangey, lanky forwards.
