Actually, the last one was 4-2. Before that it's back to 1966 and England winning 4-2 after extra time.

Well...

I am glad I got up at 4am for that!

What a game. What a spectacle. What a tournament. Ignore the politics, the human rights abuses, the location, the timing etc. Drink in the amazing football that was played.

Well done players and coaches and support staff.

Agreed, it's been a feast of footy with surprises and drama, to boot.

And what a final, well worth getting up early for.

I was surprised that France hung in there for 120 minutes, they looked a tad under the weather after Susie the waitress got to them. They certainly had their chances to win it.

2015 - USA vs Japan - USA won 5-2, Carli Lloyed scored a hat-trick.

Interestingly enough, USA beat Netherlands 2 - nil in the 2019 final.  Next time they play each other will be July next year in Wellington.

Being a final, that was probably the greatest game of all time.

My view is different.

1999, World Cup final, with USA vs China.   Game was scoreless at the end of full time and golden goal extra time.  On to a penalty shootout.   China went first, scored, then USA, scored, and so on. China missed the third shot, USA scored, they then each scored again leaving it 4 all with USA to take the next shot.  Brandi Chastain lines up and takes the shot, scores giving USA the win on home soil.

Brandi Chastain celebrates and gets some media coverage for it - of note, calibration was repeated by Chloe Kelly when the Lionesses scored the winning goal in the Euro finals.

Why is it an important game. The win in the US brought the attention of the game to the US public and I think indirectly lead to the creation of the National Womans Soccer League, also it gained attention for womans soccer and the media that went with it.  Along with FIFA working on developing professional leagues throughout the world, and the inclusiveness of the players the game has been steadily growing.

More recently international matches in the game are more often leading to sell-out crowds, with the opening match of the Euro finals selling out (72,000) and the final (87,000) at Wembley as examples.  The Lionesses game vs USA at Wembly sold out in 24 hours.

Also, important is the USWNT fight for equal pay resulting in them settling with the USFF and winning better funding for development of the game, thanks to advocacy from players such as Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan (whom I think may both be here next year) and other players in the team.

So that is my greatest game, not just because of the game played, but because of its long-term impact.
