Agree. yes One News needs to go ahead, but Duke is there for a reason ...
So put the 5 hours recovery on Duke?
Batman:
Nope why would you want to do that
The complaints here are that the coverage ended after the race

5 hours seems very over the top - considering that most of that time was the tow back which was not interesting.
The official coverage of the races was being livestreamed on Youtube so there are no other programming considerations there. Individual TV channels globally could then have chosen what they wanted to do if the official broadcasters had continued coverage. Poor decision by the AC producers to end their coverage when it was abundantly clear that Patriot was in trouble.
I believe they should have continued coverage until it was it was clear whether Patriot was completely lost or whether they had been successful refloating her. To cut coverage when she is evidently sinking was a poor decision in my personal opinion.
My views are my own, and may not necessarily represent those of my employer.

Just before they cut, I think Ken Read identified the boat was in real trouble and in danger of sinking. So it wasn't like it wasn't super obvious there was an issue - anyone who had seen the ETNZ righting videos from their oopsies knew something looked off. Yet the global stream was still cut and at that point the boat was at real risk of going down.
I'm also miffed at the race direction - long lingering shots of the shore-based crowd waving while boats are executing moves in a high-risk race did my head in.
The last race had to be started by 6PM and any run-on was going to be shown on Duke - so there was clearly a plan for if things went wrong - but shutting the coverage off with no post-race (it was the end of the round as well) is about as big of a fail as you can get given what had unfolded and what was was playing out with the recovery. Understand TVNZ's hands were tied when the official feed got cut but they'd cut away to Tony Street well before then - they still had a reporter on the scene radioing in during the news hour so could have chosen to continue to show things from the recovery, even just on FB live if need be. It was very poorly done.
cyril7: Hi maybe a heavy component inside (battery assembly purhaps) broke loose and hurled through the Hull is my guess.
Cyril
You wouldn't need that, it came down from a fair height, at a great speed. They say hitting water above a certain speed is like hitting concrete. Also I assume most of the hull is carbon-fibre. I think that is incredibly strong in one direction, but if it is hit from a different angle it will shatter easily. Hitting the water in that manner will probably stress the structure in ways not intended in the design which may cause a failure.

Should have watched the official Youtube stream. Toni Street and the ads was worse than Season 3 of Stranger Things

In the end I switched over to the YouTube stream after TVNZ cut away, but that ended shortly after as well.
The official commentators seem to listen to what's going on the boat whereas the TVNZ ones seem to want to talk constantly.

I get that. I would have watched it all if they kept running

TVNZ coverage is terrible. The channel coverage is excellent. Expert opinion from sailors and light banter from the Kiwi
Oblivian: Fyi the tvnz crew are commentary. That's it, no control of the feed, overlays and cuts.
They get the intl youtube source, and run with it. Like radio rubgy commentary watching sky from comfort of home.
Isnt it the other way? You Tube AC Channel runs non stop, TVNZ chats or goes to the live channel feed or goes to ads

I was watching the international feed, and I was quite disappointed when the boat was righted worryingly low in the water (commentators commented on this), before it cut to an aerial flyby and the stream stopped.
There were 3.5k people watching the live sail die stream at one point. And that was just a phone stream from a boat at the distance the public were allowed.
The official camera boat (the big catamaran one with the stabilized camera) remained on scene, I assume to record footage for highlights packages etc. But was a bit of a tease watching a phone stream while the special stabilized camera boat moved back and forth blocking the footage.

After watching some of the pre Christmas and now the Prada races, I have to agree the broadcast standards are below par in this day and age of outside sports broadcasting.
After living in Sydney for 30 years I now realise how spoilt I was for FTA sports coverage. But not only that but how excellent it was. The broadcast technology innovation just got better with each year. Think of all the rugby and cricket broadcast technology progression. I also believe they have the better commentators (I know debatable). But on top of all of that the whole production; use of camera's, tech and commentators was/is far superior. Their sports broadcast producers know all the relevant sport camera angles and shots, when to cut to the correct camera, how long to stay on that camera etc. It is almost instinctive with their producers. Crowd shots and cheesy commentary shots are reserved for down time moments, not halfway through an active moment.
Come On NZ lift your game. You have the whole world watching these races and in these times where a lot of the world is in lock down there is probably more people watching than previous cups.
Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.
