WyleECoyoteNZ:

Not strictly on Topic, but relevant given recent discussion's around the Indy 500.

Scott Dixon was robbed at gunpoint while at a Taco Bell drive through.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/motorsport/92866294/indy-500-polesitter-scott-dixon-wife-former-teammate-robbed-at-gunpoint

Dario Franchitti was also in the car at the time.

A report I heard on Radio Live news bulletin said two teenagers had been arrested in relation to the robbery.

15yo teens no less.

Alonso has good car control yes. But this is a race which the driver is not there for their car control, but to drive a rigged car (a left turning car) at the limit of friction, and adjusting the limits with his hands according to how the limits of friction changes. the strategist calls out the strategy (inc fuel consumption). i guess one thing he's used to is to save fuel lol. makes me want to watch the race nonetheless. anyone knows what time?

Pre Race 3am to 4am Monday, Race 4am to 7-30am ESPN2 on Sky

Yes, its very much like F1, "rigged", team calls strategy, fuel saving. I guess what you are saying is that driver skill is not that important as they just turn the wheel.

No drivers don't just turn the wheel in Indy, they also change the car's structure and mechanics by pushing levers to maximize available downforce over the race. Apparently this takes seasons of experience.

And drafting. Forgot about drafting. This is the singlemost effective way to increase speed while saving heaps of fuel. Eg if my team has 4 cars and 1 leader, I might choose to use 3 cars to "pull" the guy over 6 hours and he wins. While you may have 4 fastest cars but 4 favourites and no drafting and lose.

Exactly. And while F1 has one optimal line, ovals, especially large ovals have multiple lines. His performances to date are outstanding

Haven't watched quali but Ferrari 1-2, Kimi on pole, RBR and Toro Rosso up there, Hamilton on 13th. Hard to see Ferrari not being 1-2 in the race, and hard to see Hamilton getting any worthwhile points. Should be a standard boring Monaco race, maybe Hamilton giving it a go to add some spice

Hard to see? wait till the second corner then you can see. Also depends on safety car "luck" and reactions. THere will be safety cars. Lots.

I know, I know, thats standard in F1, but there is no passing, so the luck is all you have. With these tyres having a much longer life, especially on a track that has less high speed strain, dipping out when a safety car happens, you still cant pass.

yes, but get the start wrong and react wrongly to safety car and you're stuck behind the pack. forever. so i don't see a ferrari 1-2 until after pitting (ie no more pitting). then it's down to reliability.

there will be some overtaking though, hamilton will take any risk to get some points.

My point is, that Monaco is heavily skewed to the quali grid. Heavily. That doesnt mean that the grid = the race. Hamilton will take risks, yep, why not. Im watching FP3 now, then quali. I gather his tyres ran out? He is aggressive, and in the past that cost him from tyre life. He is 13th, if he got to 9th, thats a good effort. Luck may help that. Bottas in 3, his ambitions will take a hit, best to reduce that rather than DNF which he can do. Please drop the whining and race (Hamilton, not you)

Kimi was pissed!

Righteously angry too!  Ferrari staying true to form, making Barrichello, Massa, and now Raikkonen "move over" to orchestrate the "preferred" result.  (though in this case, it was achieved marginally less overtly - and with no opportunity for non-conformance)  Particularly brutal on Ferrari's part as only 1/4 of the season had played out.  I expect to see Kimmi phoning it in for the rest of the season...

As for Hamilton - obviously a number of things went wrong that were beyond his control.  (You don't tend to see drivers topping the time sheets (by a fair margin) in one session then struggling for 8th a couple of hours later without external factors being in play)  Failure to get a banker lap on the board in Q2 obviously meant that his weekend was a write-off when Vandoorne crashed ahead of him on his timed lap.  7th was good damage limitation - mostly attributable to good strategy from Mercedes and Hamilton keeping out of trouble.

Roll on Canada - hopefully we'll see some more good inter-team racing again :-)

Martin Brundle suspected the merc garage tweaked a whole lot of stuff that made the car undrivable during quali.

I'm most surprised that no one hit the barrier!

You mean as Piquet Jnr wasn't in the race? Oh, that wasn't an accidental crash.

Maybe the lack of tyre degradation cuts the risk of crashes. A lot of instability has been removed, no more cliffs.

Side topic, Alonso was great. Better than great. As one commentator said, its like he's been racing ovals for 10 years. Always up there and learning every lap.

So summary recap from the weekend...

That indy crossover event was cool, like really cool.  I don't know if the organisers realised just how cool that would be.

Alonso did himself a lot of marketing favour there, good on him.

Common theme, Honda engines blow up.

At least in Indy they were competitive prior to exploding.

Monaco is the glamour race, but with cars 20cm wider this year, it's just too damn narrow to be anything more than a procession with the hope that someone else stuffs up and you can capitalise on a well timed pitstop and some free space ahead when you return to the track.

That said, it's still more interesting than the 5 abreast tracks, with massive run off areas etc.  Toto described them as supermarket car park tracks and I kinda agree.

Ovals man, boring, but contain the racing like a gladiator ring, and the focus is on racing.  I think F1 misses that point big time.

Yes this years cars are up to 5s a lap faster.  What's missing is the racing, but at least this year it's a two team race, even if it's still just a two driver race.

Americas cup boats have more in common with race cars and aero planes than boats this year.  The short and fast format does encourage racing, so I'm all for it.
Unusual observation: Team NZ always seems to be leaving forward when up on the foils, where as the other boats sit tend to sit flat.
